Superintendent - Underground Utilities (Heavy Civil)

Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000 / year
Description
The Superintendent is responsible for leading field operations on underground utility construction projects, ensuring work is executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to company quality standards. This role owns the day-to-day jobsite performance working closely with Construction Foreman, coordinating labor, equipment, subcontractors, and materials to deliver profitable projects.

Field Leadership & Execution
- Lead all field operations for underground utility projects including water, sewer, storm drain, and related civil scopes
- Direct and coordinate crews, subcontractors, and vendors to meet production goals
- Build and maintain daily/weekly work plans aligned with project schedule
- Ensure proper installation methods, sequencing, and productivity in line with company/customer standards
- Perform regular site walks to monitor progress, quality, and safety
- Drive project schedule execution in coordination with the Project Manager
- Identify and remove field constraints (labor, materials, access, equipment)
- Track daily production and adjust resources to maintain progress
- Communicate schedule impacts early and propose solutions
- Understand project budgets and support field execution to meet cost targets
- Monitor labor, equipment, and material usage against budget
- Identify and communicate potential cost overruns or inefficiencies
- Support change order identification through field awareness
- Enforce company safety policies and regulatory requirements (OSHA, local/state)
- Participate and ensure that daily jobsite safety meetings are held and ensure proper documentation is completed daily by each Crew Foreman
- Maintain a culture where safety is non-negotiable
- Immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors
- Ensure all work meets contract requirements, specifications, and company standards
- Coordinate inspections and testing as required
- Prevent rework through proactive planning and oversight
- Partner closely with Project Managers on schedule, cost, and issue resolution
- Interface with inspectors, general contractors, and clients in the field
- Participate in project meetings and provide clear field updates
- Communicate effectively with internal teams (estimating, accounting, operations)
- Plan and coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials for each phase of work
- Ensure crews have what they need before work begins (no "waiting on parts" jobsites)
- Manage subcontractors to ensure alignment with project goals
- Direct oversight of field personnel, including Foreman, operators, laborers, and subcontractors
- Responsible for crew productivity, performance, and adherence to company standards
- Provide coaching and development to field team members
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods (trenching, shoring, pipe installation, tie-ins, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and grade
- Proven ability to manage multiple moving pieces on an active jobsite
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to hold teams accountable
- Practical problem-solving mindset (field-first thinking)
- Clear and effective communication across field and office teams
- Working knowledge of safety regulations and best practices
- Minimum OSHA 30 Required
- Experience with HCSS Heavy Job or similar field reporting applications
- 5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with underground utility experience required
- Previous experience in a Superintendent or Foreman leadership role
- Experience working with General Contractors and municipal projects preferred
- Valid driver's license required
- OSHA 30 (preferred)
- Frequent presence on active construction job sites
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and heavy equipment
- Ability to walk uneven terrain, climb in/out of trenches, and inspect work areas
- Occasional lifting (50+ pounds)
- Ability to work extended hours as project demands require
