Under the direction of the Field Operations Branch Manager and working with Construction Project Managers, the General Construction Inspector (CI) performs highly complex senior‑level engineering work including the inspection of assigned statewide capital construction and minor repair projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, design and applicable codes (NEC, ICC, NFPA 1 Fire Codes, Texas Accessibility Standards, ADA Standards, TxDOT standards, ASTM, ACI, life safety codes, etc.).
Responsibilities include reviewing plans and specifications for errors, potential problem areas and code violations throughout the project lifecycle, producing inspection reports that are accurate, concise, objective and complete, and making reasonable decisions following the intent of technical provisions. The CI works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment, performs additional duties as assigned, and complies with all agency, division and branch rules, regulations and procedures.
– Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or GED.
- At least five years of experience as a superintendent or inspector of multidisciplinary projects; or five years of experience in construction inspections with ICC certifications.
- Class “C” Texas driver’s license, obtainable within 30 days of employment.
- One of the following International Code Council (ICC) Professional Inspector Certifications at time of hire:
- Commercial or Residential Building Inspector
- Commercial or Residential Electrical Inspector
- Commercial or Residential Plumbing Inspector
- Commercial or Residential Mechanical Inspector
- Certified Building Official
- Certified Building Plans Examiner
- State Board of Texas Plumbing Inspector License
- State Board of Texas Master Plumber
- State of Texas Master Electrical License
- Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Architecture Engineering may substitute for the required experience and ICC certificates.
- Two additional years of progressively responsible experience beyond the minimum requirements.
- Possession of one of the following at time of hire: ICC Code Certification.
