Job Description - Construction Inspector I, II, III or IV:
Travis South Area Office (Austin District) (2601669)
TxDOT's South Austin Area Office located in Austin, TX is looking for one Construction Inspector I, II, III or IV.
Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and complex projects within a district. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work.
Requires contact with contractors and may perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites.
- Calculate payments due to contractors for work completed.
- Ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, and related highway structures and airport improvements in compliance with plans and specifications.
- Observe and inspect ongoing construction work.
- Prepare monthly and final estimates.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned, including driving a state vehicle.
- Prepare and review correspondence.
- Attend pre‑construction meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Resolve differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Document work progress and issues arising throughout the scope of the project.
- Review construction records, inspection reports, and records audits to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Analyze procedures to identify deficiencies and recommend improvements to management.
- Interpret plans and specifications and negotiate with producers and suppliers to resolve differences.
- Advise supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assist in coordinating inspections.
- Attend pre‑construction meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.

- Conduct project reviews and inspections with FHA or FAA inspectors and district/division project managers.
- Consult with Project Engineers, resident project representatives, and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; review equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
- Coordinate communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
- Ensure adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensure material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
- Ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Ensure prompt notification and repair of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public or more costly to repair if neglected.

- Construction Inspector II: B19 – $48,244.00 – $76,028.00 per year
- Construction Inspector III: B20 – $51,158.00 – $81,351.00 per year
- Construction Inspector IV: B21 – $54,278.00 – $87,046.00 per year
