Description Job Summary

The Communications Intern is responsible for assisting with the strategic and administrative tasks related to the Catholic Center’s communications and marketing. The position reports to the Director of Evangelization and Communications and operates with some latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative. The Communications Intern holds a commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the UCC’s mission.

Position is for the  calendar year. Pay is $14/hour with no more than 10 hours of work per week.

Ministerial Character

The Chaplain is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the University Catholic Center (UCC), which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring at the UCC. In order to fulfill his mission, the Chaplain employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at the University Catholic Center help to extend the ministry of the Chaplain in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Chaplain in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential

Job Duties
  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the University Catholic Center in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Attend monthly meetings with direct supervisor & communications team
  • Scheduling with staff events to photograph
  • Photographing events and daily activities in our community
  • Editing photos according to the UCC style guide
  • Placing edited photos in a shared UCC drive within 48 hours.
  • Each Wednesday, mutually agreed upon events will be scheduled for photography. Staff will work to schedule events as far in advance as possible with the understanding that student events are often not scheduled until a week prior to the event.
  • Greater time commitments will be needed for Welcome Week, Advent and Lent.
  • Photographing events not agreed upon in advance will not count toward weekly time commitment. A spreadsheet of hours will need to be submitted semi-monthly.
  • May be asked to photograph staff for marketing materials.
Photographs should meet the following criteria
  • Photos that invite people in and clearly show what the UCC community is about.
  • Photos that are personal, emphasizing the community students want to experience (we want students to be able to picture themselves in the scene and want to be there).
  • Close up rather than far away.
  • Candid as well as posed.
  • A balance of gender, location, and activities.
Requirements Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of effective practices of evangelization.
  • Trained in Photography and editing.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the pastoral team and student leaders
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and utilize effective time management techniques.
  • Ability to carry out multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow instructions in verbal or written format.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter, good time management, creative, with ability to communicate in a professional manner
  • Ability to work well independently, and within a team
Minimum Qualifications Education and Trainings
  • Current student at UT Austin for the  calendar year
  • Currently working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g., Marketing/Communications, Advertising or Public Relations)
Experience
  • Has taken a course in photography and editing
  • Has used Adobe photo-shop
