Job SummaryThe Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) Access and Eligibility Services (AES) division is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Eligibility Advisor I to assist Texans in obtaining food, medical care, cash assistance and other social services. This temporary position, ending 31 August 2027, is eligible for telework and may lead to a regular position based on performance.
Responsibilities- Conduct interviews with applicants and recipients in person or via telephone to collect financial and personal information for public assistance programs.
- Enter data into the computer‑based eligibility system and evaluate information from electronic and other sources.
- Compute and authorize benefits in accordance with established regulations.
- Process work in compliance with state and federal regulations and established guidelines and time frames.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Work overtime, including weekends, under high‑stress and fast‑paced conditions.
Skills and Abilities

- Use fact‑finding techniques to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information provided by applicants.
- Read, understand, apply, and explain detailed regulations and policies.
- Perform basic arithmetic.
- Manage time efficiently and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
- Maintain effective work relationships with others.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Follow written and oral directions and instructions.
- Operate computers for data entry and basic office software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel). Use Microsoft Teams and soft‑phone technology.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter hours from an accredited college or university is preferred.
ExperienceOne (1) year of customer service experience with public contact (retail, call center, clerical, hospitality, banking, receptionist, or similar). Thirty (30) semester or forty‑five (45) quarter hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one (1) year of experience. Experience interviewing clients or gathering personal information in person or over the phone is preferred.
Additional InformationUpon hire, the selected candidate will sign a Temporary Employment Agreement. Temporary employees may be eligible to transfer to a regular status vacant position, contingent upon regular status position availability, tenure, and job performance.
Employees are required to work normal business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.) and may need overtime and weekend work.
All candidates must pass a fingerprint criminal history background check and other due diligence checks. HHSC uses E‑Verify.
Telework eligibility:
This position may be eligible for telework; all HHS positions are subject to state and agency telework policies and supervisor discretion.

CompensationSalary Range: $2,953.25 – $4,365.66 per month (pay frequency: monthly).
