Product Designer
Our client is looking for a product designer to join their small, but growing team of high-performers. They’re after someone who approaches problems from first principles, honing in on underlying causes and diligently iterating towards the best solution. They believe that great products feature incredible experiences that customers never want to stop using.
About Our ClientFounded in New Zealand in 2017, the company is a visual progress tracking solution for complex construction projects. Their mission is to simplify construction through shared visibility. Customers love their products because it helps them stay on schedule, validate construction claims and communicate progress more effectively.
They are a rapidly growing company, and are used by some of the largest construction firms across Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. They’re deliberate and thoughtful in everything that they do, and emphasize awareness, care and quality in their approach to product development.
About the RoleYou would be the first full time designer in the US, leading a key portion of the UX design and usability efforts. This will involve continuing to nurture their core product, while also developing concepts for potential new products.
Key aspects of the role include:
- End to end design: leveraging a range of research techniques and design methods to understand customer problems, prototype ideas, and monitor the effectiveness of solutions throughout the product life cycle.
- AI-forward design and ideation: actively leveraging AI tools to augment your design process, and driving the adoption of AI workflows across the whole Product & Engineering team.
- Collaborative iteration: working closely with their customers, product managers and engineers from inception to delivery. You’ll be experienced at soliciting design critiques and proactively bouncing ideas around.
- Looking ahead: in addition to addressing today’s challenges, you’ll also be thinking about the scalability of the design system and the future directions their products could take. You will ensure that their solutions remain simple and elegant as they expand, refining and trimming where required.
- Customer interaction: they believe that spending time in customers’ environments is key to truly understanding their needs. Sometimes you’ll be observing and absorbing, and other times you’ll be leading usability sessions, focus groups and other solution testing.
Our client wants curious, driven and enthusiastic people who love the design process, and are motivated by the prospect of building solutions that endure. The people who thrive at the company are critical thinkers who are not afraid to embrace the unconventional.
If the following resonates with you, we should definitely chat:
- Value-oriented:
Our client is focused on ensuring that users get genuine value from their solutions. You’ll be someone who sees methodologies, best practices and patterns as useful tools, but you don’t blindly adopt them and never let them get in the way of great customer outcomes. - Obsessed with the “why”:
You’re someone who cares about the details, and you take pride in sharing your rationale for every design decision you make. You question things that don’t make sense, and you expect others to do the same. - All about the editing:
When it comes to great design, they don’t believe you generally nail it on the first attempt. You’re someone who’s not afraid to leave a lot of ideas on the cutting room floor, and you intuitively understand that the first release is just the beginning. - Adaptable and creative:
As a small company doing ambitious things, they don’t always have the right answer, and they know that what’s worked in the past may not work in the future, but they’re not deterred by the unknown, and are excited about trying new things and finding their way through. - Communication matters:
In addition to communicating clearly and succinctly, you’re also a natural relationship-builder, and you’re equally comfortable on Slack/email, video calls and in person.
The following are definitely not required, but would be a bonus in this role:
- Startup / scale-up experience:
You’ve experienced the chaos of startups, juggled lots of competing priorities and you’ve rebuilt unscalable processes. - Solo operator:
You’ve been the first (or one of the first) hires in a new location or region and you enjoy helping to build a team / culture in addition to building products.
