Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Grammar School Librarian serves as a steward of the library for students in grades K-6, cultivating a joyful and orderly environment that nurtures a love of reading, learning, and discovery. Through story, imagination, and guided exploration, this role helps lay the foundation for students to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty. The Grammar Librarian provides leadership in the selection, organization, and care of library resources in alignment with the Classical, Christian curriculum.

This role also includes regular instruction of students during scheduled library specials, introducing age-appropriate library skills, fostering delight in good books, and supporting early habits of attention, listening, and learning.

Responsibilities
  • Library Program Leadership
    • Provide vision and care for the Grammar School Library in alignment with the mission and goals of the school
    • Create a warm, inviting, and well-ordered space that supports student learning and delight in reading
    • Serve as an active and visible presence within the Grammar School community
    • Maintain and communicate library policies related to circulation, selection, and appropriate use
  • Student Instruction & Library Specials
    • Plan and lead library classes for Grammar students as part of the specials rotation
    • Introduce students to quality literature through read-alouds, storytelling, and guided discussion
    • Teach foundational library skills, including book care, organization, and early research habits
    • Cultivate students' attention, imagination, and enjoyment of reading
    • Reinforce habits of listening, participation, and respect within the library setting
  • Student Support & Reading Development
    • Guide students in selecting books appropriate to their reading level and interests
    • Encourage a love of reading through thoughtful recommendations and displays
    • Support the development of early literacy and comprehension skills
    • Foster curiosity and a growing appreciation for good literature
    • Partner with parents, as appropriate, to encourage and support students' love of reading at home
  • Faculty Collaboration & Instructional Support
    • Collaborate with teachers to support classroom learning and curriculum needs
    • Provide resources that complement classroom instruction and classical content
    • Partner with teachers on projects, reading lists, and enrichment opportunities
    • Communicate regularly with teachers regarding student needs and library use
  • Collection Development & Resource Management
    • Select and maintain a collection of books and resources appropriate for Grammar students
    • Ensure materials reflect the values and mission of a Classical, Christian education
    • Organize, catalog, and care for library materials to ensure accessibility and longevity
    • Regularly assess and refresh the collection
  • Operations & Administration
    • Maintain library systems, circulation records, and organization of materials
    • Develop and manage the library budget in coordination with school leadership
    • Supervise student helpers and coordinate parent volunteers as appropriate
    • Collaborate with Rhetoric School library staff to support continuity across divisions
Qualifications

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to engage and manage young students with warmth, clarity, and consistency
    • Excellent communication and relational skills with students, faculty, and parents
    • A genuine love for children s literature and early learning
    • Ability to cultivate a joyful, structured, and nurturing environment
    • Discernment in selecting literature aligned with a Classical, Christian worldview
    • Basic proficiency with library systems and educational technology
  • Educational Requirements
    • Bachelor s degree required; background in Education, Library Science, or related field preferred
    • Master s degree in Library Science preferred
    • Experience working with elementary-aged children strongly preferred
    • Classroom teaching or instructional experience preferred
    • Commitment to the mission and values of a Classical, Christian education
  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to lift, carry, and move books and library materials (up to approximately 25-30 pounds)
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit on the floor or in low seating while working with young students
    • Ability to shelve books and organize materials throughout the library space
    • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as shelving, sorting, and inventorying materials
