Position: Secondary Dyslexia and Special Education Teacher (ELA)

Secondary Dyslexia and Special Education Teacher (ELA)

The Dyslexia and Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with dyslexia and other learning differences, helping them access grade-level curriculum and achieve academic growth.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or subject/level training.
  • Reading Specialist/Dyslexia training (Wilson, Reading by Design, etc.).
  • Experience with creating IEPs, progress reports, transition plans, and SOPs.
  • Background/knowledge in reading, intervention strategies, and research‑based instructional strategies.
  • Experience in reading intervention strategies and actual implementation.
  • Strong commitment to help all children succeed.
  • Ability to interpret assessment data to drive instruction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, school personnel, and parents, and to work collaboratively.
  • Special Education certification required.
  • ESL certification required.
Professional Responsibilities and Duties
  • Special Education case management, including creating IEPs, progress reports, transition plans, SOPs, and age of majority paperwork.
  • Interpret assessment data to drive instruction and IEPs.
  • Review data to make instructional decisions to address student weaknesses.
  • Prepare and deliver focused reading intervention instruction in a small group setting.
  • Utilize instructional management systems to support and increase student achievement; maximize time on task.
  • Monitor student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals.
  • Maintain accurate records on student achievement, articulating progress and success.
  • Provide explicit, scientifically based instruction to small groups of students.
  • Assist in the scheduling and assignment of students to the program.
  • Prepare classroom materials and lesson plans and implement research based instructional practices.
  • Observe, evaluate, remediate, and extend students' academic performance, behavior, and social development.
  • Identify, modify, and adapt curriculum and approved instructional resources to meet various learning styles and needs of students.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods to instruct students individually, in small groups, and/or as a whole class.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Implement and maintain effective classroom management to ensure continual progress of students.
  • Establish standards‑based objectives for all lessons and utilize clear criteria for evaluating lessons.
  • Utilize efficient record‑keeping procedures.
  • Meet and confer with parents and guardians to discuss student progress.
  • Communicate and confer effectively orally and in written form with students, parents, colleagues, and administration.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Meet professional criteria and obligations.
  • Follow special education and dyslexia procedures.
  • Administer standardized achievement and ability tests as required (e.g., CTOPP for Dyslexia evaluations).
  • Enforce NYOS Charter School rules and policies.
  • Actively participate in meetings and professional development activities to improve student achievement.
  • Use audiovisual aids, computers, and other interactive technology to supplement and support lessons.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with current educational issues.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, self‑motivation, and responsibility.
  • Exemplify high standards of behavior, words, and dress expected by the school.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding information concerning students, parents, staff, and classroom incidents.
  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model professional behavior.
  • Participate in approved professional development to improve job-related skills.
  • Follow NYOS standard procedures for communication, interaction, and discipline as outlined in the NYOS Staff Handbook.
