Summary:
The DAEP/ISS Teacher serves students assigned to the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) and In‑School Suspension (ISS) at Texas School for the Deaf. When student assignments are limited, the position may function in an itinerant capacity to support classroom management and instruction, and to provide academic support in one‑on‑one or small‑group settings.
This position provides instructional, behavioral, and social‑emotional support while ensuring compliance with Special Education laws, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and the Student Code of Conduct. The position works collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members, administrators, related service providers, residential staff, and families to support student success through positive behavior interventions, restorative practices, social‑emotional learning, and individualized behavioral supports. It also involves maintaining a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment through the use of de‑escalation strategies, behavior intervention techniques, and crisis prevention approaches.
EssentialFunctions
- Establishes and maintains a highly structured, organized, and supportive classroom environment with consistent schedules, routines, expectations, and procedures.
- Manages student behavior in accordance with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), the Student Code of Conduct, and MANDT philosophy (or designated PBIS system), including safely and effectively responding to behavioral crises, physical confrontations, and de‑escalation situations.
- Plans and implements appropriate instructional strategies, learning activities, materials, technology, and behavioral supports that reflect students’ diverse learning styles, communication needs, and academic abilities.
- Develops, modifies, and implements curriculum and instructional materials in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members to support student progress on assignments, projects, assessments, and IEP goals.
- Remains knowledgeable of and complies with federal and state Special Education laws, the Student Code of Conduct, DAEP and ISS requirements, and TSD regulations, policies, and procedures related to special education services and behavioral supports.
- Collaborates with students, families, teachers, related service providers, instructional staff, student support personnel, and residential team members to implement IEP services, accommodations, behavioral supports, and interventions identified through ARD Committees and student staffing meetings.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation, including reports, behavioral records, instructional data, communication logs, and other required records.
- Establishes and maintains open communication with parents, students, administrators, and TSD staff through conferences, meetings, email correspondence, and phone communication.
- Keeps parents informed of student progress, behavioral concerns, and interventions through ongoing communication and collaboration.
- Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), behavioral accommodations, and tiered interventions for students receiving behavioral and social‑emotional supports.
- Works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to provide social‑emotional learning, behavioral instruction, restorative practices, and positive behavior interventions for students receiving tiered supports and services.
- Provides instructional and behavioral support services during Extended School Year (ESY) and other district‑designated programs or alternative instructional times, as assigned.
- Provides instructional and behavioral support in itinerant settings across campus, as assigned, to support classroom management, instructional delivery, accelerated instruction, academic and student engagement support when DAEP/ISS caseloads are limited.
