SUMMARY

Provides classroom instruction to deaf students in the assigned subjects. Plans, develops, presents, modifies curricula. Prepares lesson plans and other instructional materials to student ability levels and in accordance with student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Evaluates and documents appropriate data to monitor student progress and serves as an advisor/advocate for students in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process. Works in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides classroom instruction to deaf students using a variety of teaching strategies in response to student learning styles.
  • Plans, develops, presents, and modifies curricula to meet student needs.
  • Develops engaging, hands-on instruction that helps prepare students for college-level coursework or competitive employment.
  • Submits lesson plans per department requirements.
  • Establishes ongoing, collaborative relationships with the local community and local colleges and employers to ensure that the curriculum adequately prepares students to excel in college-coursework or jobs related to business, human services, consumer services, or related fields.
  • Serves as an Advisory Teacher/Advocate for assigned students. Collaborates with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD committee process for each student assigned and Participates in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis. Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP and using a variety of teaching techniques.
  • Works cooperatively with the instructional team to regularly modify curricula as needed to assist students in their classroom assignments.
  • Uses technology for teaching/learning process.
  • Manages student behavior in accordance with the code of conduct and individual behavior programs .

    Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in the subjects and level of assignment and appropriate Special Education certification or the ability to obtain valid Texas certifications within prescribed time frame.
  • Sign Language:
    The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is ADVANCED.
