Job Description

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Length of Employment: 189 CLASSIFIED DAYS

    Full time NON-EXEMPT

SUMMARY:

Assists CTE teachers (with an emphasis on Trades-related courses such as welding, automotive technology, collision repair & refinishing, robotics, and construction technology) to provide for the instructional needs of deaf or hard of hearing students in the educational setting. Assists in the design and preparation of instructional materials for the classroom, plans and implements various activities, supervises and monitors students inside and outside the classroom, and works with students on an individual or group basis.

Works under the general supervision of the Career & Technical Education Supervisor.

Instructional Support

  • Assists CTE teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays for student and instructor use
  • Assists with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments and work assignments
  • Participates in the direct service planning in a team approach with Teachers and other departmental staff on established department committees and assists with lesson planning activity development
  • Helps with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
  • Helps teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports
  • Provides orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
  • Assumes responsibility for the supervision and instruction of students in the absence of the Teacher
  • Conducts instructional exercises assigned by teacher; work with individual students in small groups
  • Participates in student data collection, documentation and interpretation
  • Keeps the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students

Student Management

  • Implements behavior management plan written for individual students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior using the TSD preferred method, the Mandt System, as needed
  • Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
  • Works with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher
  • Helps supervise students throughout the school day; inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, work training area, bus, field trips and community
  • Keep teacher informed of problems of individual student
  • Acts as an advocate for students

Other Functions

  • Participates in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • One year of experience working with children or youth in an educational, recreational or similar situation OR 60 hours of college coursework in a field related to child growth, child development, child or adult care education or similar
  • One year of experience working in the trades-related field such as welding, construction, automotive technology or a related field
  • Educational Aide Certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency or the ability to obtain a valid Educational Aide certificate within 60 days of hire as required by 19 TAC §230.51.
  • Sign Language:
    The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is ADVANCED.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associates degree or Certificate in welding, automotive technology, construction technology or a related field.
  • Experience at a residential school for the deaf or another residential childcare facility
  • Experience in teaching and caring for youth who are deaf, hard of hearing, or possess multiple disabilities
  • Proficient sign communications skills
