Orientation and Mobility Instructor (Austin)
Position located at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC), 4800 North Lamar, Austin, TX. The role involves providing instruction and training to individuals who are blind or visually impaired, covering travel skills, independent living, communication, and vocational skills using non‑visual and alternative teaching techniques.
Responsibilities- Deliver individual or group training in travel skills, emotional adjustment to blindness, communication, and vocational skills.
- Assist customers in developing, achieving, and maintaining independent living and employment goals.
- Develop or maintain referral sources and complete case documentation of teaching services.
- Provide consultative services and technical assistance to team members in developing customers’ rehabilitation plans.
- Conduct training sessions using non‑visual and alternative teaching techniques.
- Respond to customer complaints and document actions.
- Install, set up, and troubleshoot adaptive aids and devices.
- Support staff or external organizations in specialized casework as needed.
- Review and oversee the evaluation of files to determine, provide, and coordinate vocational rehabilitative services.
- For senior‑level (O&M Instructor IV) positions: supervise staff, evaluate long‑range training needs, develop training recommendations, prepare budgets for training or educational programs, and oversee data compilation.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- TS II:
- Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited four‑year college or university, OR
- Certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education (with COMS) OR Certification by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (with NOMC).
- TS III:
- Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited institution plus one year of full‑time experience teaching blind or visually impaired students in indoor and outdoor travel, OR
- Certification (COMS or NOMC) plus one year of full‑time experience as described above.
- TS IV:
- Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility plus three years of full‑time experience teaching blind or visually impaired students in indoor and outdoor travel, OR
- Certification (COMS or NOMC) plus three years of full‑time experience as described above.
- Certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education (with COMS).
- Certification by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (with NOMC).
- Willingness to participate in an extended blindfold‑immersion training program.
- Flexible work hours; occasional travel up to 5% within Texas.
- Ability to lift or carry up to 10 pounds.
- Competitive starting salary: $4,583.33 – $5,746.66 per month.
