Assistant International Student Advisor
The Assistant International Student Advisor serves as a vital resource for international students navigating their educational journey in the United States. This role on the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team combines expertise in immigration regulations with a passion for student success to create a supportive environment for our varied international community. The assistant international student advisor supports students through expert guidance on immigration matters while ensuring institutional compliance with federal regulations.
This position reports to the senior international student advisor.
- Serve as Department of Homeland Security Designated School Official and provide general guidance to F-1 international students regarding immigration regulations and policies.
- Issue I-20 documents and process immigration requests with precision and meticulous attention to regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and update student records in the Student and Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS) in accordance with federal regulations.
- Stay current with evolving immigration policies and contribute to the team’s collective expertise.
- Collaborate with ISSS leadership to interpret and apply complex immigration regulations, exercising sound judgment within your scope of authority.
- Manage inquiries through departmental communication channels with professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and attention to detail.
- Provide clear, accurate guidance to international students on immigration status, benefits, and compliance requirements.
- Liaise with federal agencies regarding student immigration benefits, serving as an advocate for students when appropriate.
- Host engaging webinars and workshops that translate complex immigration regulations into accessible information.
- Help maintain website information regarding programs, services, and related resources for international students.
- Contribute to critical programming initiatives, including new student orientation, intercultural and social events, and specialized workshops.
- Work as a highly functioning, collaborative member of the student advising team to support the needs of UT Austin’s international student community.
- Coordinate with front desk personnel to ensure seamless service delivery and appropriate response prioritization.
- Support and assist administrative staff with efficient in‑person services for time‑sensitive documents, including travel signatures, course drop forms, and verification letters.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement that benefit both students and the institution.
- Transform routine administrative interactions into opportunities to build rapport with students.
- Champion ISSS and Texas Global priorities through active participation in programs and community‑building events.
- Contribute to innovation through collaborative participation in staff meetings and working groups focused on enhancing service delivery.
- Foster a sense of belonging by supporting and staffing programs that connect international students and scholars with each other and the greater University community.
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of related international experience.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to interpret and apply complex regulations.
- Exceptional customer service orientation with a student‑centered approach.
- Superior written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Professional demeanor and diplomatic approach to cross‑cultural communication.
- Strong intercultural competence and sensitivity to various student needs.
- Proven public speaking abilities and experience delivering presentations to various audiences.
- Self‑motivated work style with ability to function effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Resilience and adaptability in a dynamic, high‑volume environment.
