Support special and general education teachers in meeting the instructional and personal care needs of students with disabilities in special and general education settings. Assist with implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, medical/physical supports, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS Education/Certification- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate (may be obtained after employment if not already held)
- Meet one of the following:
- Completion of two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 semester hours of college coursework); or
- Associate’s degree or higher; or
- Meet rigorous standards of quality through an approved course of study for paraprofessionals (e.g., ESC Region 13 courses)
- Ability to work effectively with students with special needs
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain professional relationships with students, faculty, and the public
- Some experience working with children preferred
- Prepare instructional materials, including modifying/adapting classroom activities and assignments under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce IEP objectives.

- Assist students with physical needs, including transferring, lifting, and positioning.
- Assist students with self-help and personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene.
- Implement behavior strategies outlined in the IEP and/or Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), or as directed by the teacher; inform the teacher of concerns or changes.
- Learn and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communication, and social-emotional needs.
- Monitor and support students throughout the school day, including vocational sites, field trips, lunch, hallways, bus loading/unloading, and outdoor areas.
- Maintain SAMA certification if required and implement de‑escalation techniques; assist with physical containment in emergency situations as trained.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student and coworker information, as required by FERPA.
- Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Follow established schedules, routines, and approved lesson plans.
- Demonstrate flexibility in assignments and schedule adjustments.
- Assist in maintaining an organized and clean environment.
- Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of materials and equipment.
- Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
