Responsible to prepare and deliver Japanese language and culture coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline‑appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to student success, create an environment that promotes belonging for all, and demonstrate knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures. This adjunct position has been created to sustain our Japanese program while the regular Japanese professor is on sabbatical during the fall of 2023 and spring of 2024.
Aboutthe Department
ACC's World Languages Department (WOLA) is a high‑performing program that has earned an "Exemplary" assessment rating for six consecutive years. We offer a comprehensive Japanese program featuring a four‑semester sequence (I‑IV), an AA degree, and a signature summer study abroad program in Japan. Our curriculum is strictly aligned with the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards, prioritizing global competence and communicative proficiency.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties- Prepare and teach courses in the field of Japanese to a varied student population based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to community college students and the discipline's standards.
- Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
- Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner that does not discriminate based on protected categories.
- Remain current in the field through continuous professional development activities.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, or associate vice president.
- Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing learning management systems such as Blackboard to develop and deliver instructional content, and highly proficient in using video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Google Meet) and digital resources across face‑to‑face, hybrid, and distance education modalities.
- Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
- Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve retention and success.
- Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
- Comply with published college policies and professional standards for teaching in a community college.
- Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
- Educational requirements in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards.
- Work is routinely performed in a classroom or laboratory setting.
- Subject to standing, walking, sitting, and reaching for extended periods.
- Work safely and follow safety rules; report unsafe conditions and behavior.
