Primary PurposeProvide students receiving special education services with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curriculum and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability level. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsement for subject and level assigned or approved alternative certification program
- ESL certification preferred
- Candidates must have a satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (≈ $50) paid by employee.
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
- Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
- Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs to provide specially designed instruction
- Effective communication skills

- Ability to research and develop teaching units
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Student teaching or approved internship or related work experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Professionalism- Adhere to the Educators' Code of Ethics as set forth in the Texas Administrative Code, including standards for practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community.
- Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop the IEP through the ARD Committee process for each assigned student.
- Implement an instructional or skill development program and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify and accommodate regular curriculum as needed and assist students in general education classes.
- Participate in ARD and transition committee meetings regularly.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Present subject matter according to IEP guidelines.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet student needs and capabilities.
- Supervise teacher aides and volunteers as needed.
- Perform all case management duties for students on caseload.
- Prepare required documentation and paperwork (transition assessments, PLAAFP statements, IEP goals, accommodations, recommendations).
- Use technology to strengthen teaching and learning.
- Conduct ongoing assessment during formal and informal testing and data collection.
- Provide or supervise personal, medical care, and feeding as stated in the IEP.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities and sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Manage student behavior and administer discipline, including crisis intervention and physical restraint per IEP.
- Consult with classroom teachers regarding behavior management per IEP.
- Request assistance from central special education as needed.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, facilities.
