Head Librarian, Technical Services & Library Automation

Job Description Summary

Provides leadership, planning, management, and strategic direction for the Technical Services and Library Automation (TSLA) team in support of Austin Community College Library Services. Oversees college-wide acquisitions, cataloging and metadata services, collection management infrastructure, library systems coordination, resource access, vendor relations, materials budgeting, and technical services operations. Leads the development and implementation of workflows, policies, procedures, reporting, and assessment practices that support discovery, access, and stewardship of library resources across all ACC campuses and service locations.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Directly supervise and provide leadership for the Technical Services and Library Automation (TSLA) team, with responsibility for all functional areas including acquisitions, cataloging and metadata services, authority control, collection management and maintenance, serials, interlibrary loan, library systems and automation, resource access, vendor relations, and materials budgeting.
  • Serves on the Library Leadership Team, and participates in the Library Services, Teaching and Learning Excellence (TLED), and college-wide committees and meetings.
  • Provides basic reference services, online services, and selective dissemination of information needed for students, faculty, administration, staff, and the community.
  • Develops and maintains library policies, procedures, and services, and supports coordination of college‑wide library responsibilities.
  • Participates in subject specialty credentialing programs.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues in the college, local, state, regional, and national library and academic communities.
  • Collaborates with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective support for student learning, teaching, and institutional priorities.
  • Lead change management and sustainability efforts related to collections, systems, workflows, and resource access.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with technology partners on library systems and integrations.
  • Coordinates library activities with community agencies as appropriate.
  • Manage library services functions, including selection, supervision, development and evaluation of Library Services faculty and staff.
  • Makes recommendations, reports, and actively participates in strategic planning, budget preparation, expenditure, and assessment.
  • Gathers and reports data on Library Services functions and services.
  • Participates in facilities design, management, and Library Services public relations.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of the LS information literacy instruction and library instructional program.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by Academic Affairs Leadership.
Technology
  • Integrated library systems, discovery services, and library technologies, including MARC records, OCLC, and metadata.
  • Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.
  • Computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom.
  • Online learning management systems such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).

  • Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
  • Participate in graduation, general assembly, and other official college functions.
  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
  • Attend and participate in college-wide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.
  • Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
Required Education
  • Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory or management experience in academic library technical services, collections, acquisitions, metadata, and library systems.
Other Requirements
  • Reliable transportation for travel in the Austin area – ACC District as required.
