Substitute Teacher

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, help students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and to provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms.

Responsibilities include:

• Reporting to school office at beginning of school day to report for duty
• Following sign out procedures as prescribed by the principal
• Carrying out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher
• Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
• Guiding the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned
• Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives
• Maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
• Taking attendance in accordance with school procedures
• Indicating to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school and Wayside Schools policies
• Ensuring that the students are never left unattended in the classroom
• Performing duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.
• Knowing emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned
• Knowing procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems
• Knowing school procedures and regulations
• Performing other related duties as directed by principal

Physical Effort and Work Environment includes:

• Frequent prolonged and irregular hours of duty
• Some light to heavy manual labor
• Enduring possible inclement weather conditions to provide for student safety
• Able to follow instructions and complete tasks efficiently
• Physically able to perform duties assigned at sufficient speed

Personal Work Relationships include:

• Less experienced candidates will receive additional guidance on instructional matters and those with more experience will serve as mentors
• Supervisor may provide detailed instruction regarding changes in policies, procedures, or laws or in reference to unusual circumstances or problems
• Significant contact with scholars, parents, and other school staff to provide instruction, offer guidance, and exchange information
• Candidate may also maintain contacts within the community, contracted service providers and/or vendors

• The office hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., however, from time to time may work an extended schedule, including weekends and evenings according to demands of the role and tasks
