Hello. I am a doctoral student under the direction of Dr. Barrett Mincey in the College of Doctoral Studies at Grand Canyon University. My name is Amanda Camarena. I am conducting a research study to learn how Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers use supports to overcome burnout.
INCLUSION- I am recruiting individuals that meet these criteria:
- Are at least 18 years old.
- Provide informed consent.
- Currently work as a DLI target language teacher (Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, etc.) in an elementary school (K-6).
- Have at least two years of experience as a DLI teacher
- Are currently employed in the Western United States (UT, CA, WA, OR, NV, CO, AZ, NM, ).
- Have experienced burnout at some point during their DLI teaching career.
- Are willing to answer required personal, identifiable demographic questions lasting about 5-10 minutes related to:
- Gender, age, race/ethnicity, total years teaching, total years teaching in DLI, DLI program type, DLI target language, and school context.
- Are able to participate in an approximately 60-minute Zoom interview in English and complete a review of the transcript.
EXCLUSION
- You cannot be in this study if:
- Are under the age of 18.
- Do not provide informed consent or consent to be recorded.
- Are not a current DLI teacher (former teachers, administrators, para educators).
- Teach outside the Western U.S. region defined for the study.
- Have not experienced burnout at some point in your DLI teaching career.
- Are unwilling to answer required personal, identifiable demographic questions.
- Are unable to participate in an online interview in English (no internet access, unable to use Zoom, limited English proficiency).
- Are directly supervised by the researcher (to avoid conflicts of interest or coercion).
The ACTIVITIES for this research project will include:
- Complete a demographic questionnaire (5-10 minutes) about gender, age, race/ethnicity, total years teaching, total years teaching in DLI, DLI program type, DLI target language, and school context.
- Participate in a one-on-one interview via Zoom. This will include questions on your experiences overcoming burnout through positive emotion, engagement, achievement, and meaning.
- The interview will last approximately 60 minutes.
- After the interview, I will email you a copy of your transcript to review.
- Transcript review will last about 20 to 25 minutes from the comfort of your own device.
- Once you return the reviewed transcript, a $10 Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be emailed to you to thank you for your time and participation.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You will get a $10 Teachers Pay Teachers gift card by email after you finish the Zoom interview and review the transcript.
All data in this study will be protected and stored in a password-protected external hard drive. The hard drive will be stored in a personal locked cabinet. After 3 years, all electronic and paper files will be destroyed. Three years from the expected study completion date will be 12-25-29.
