Associate Academic Advisor, McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering in Cockrell School of Engineering
The Associate Academic Advisor supports the success and engagement of undergraduate in McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering students through academic advising, student support programming, and coordination of key undergraduate initiatives. This position provides individual and group advising, manages peer academic support programs, administers student scholarships and awards, and assists with student success, retention, and degree completion efforts. The role collaborates closely with students, faculty, staff, and university partners to enhance the undergraduate student experience through advising, academic support services, data analysis, and departmental events and outreach activities.
Student Advising and Academic Support
- Provide individual and group academic advising to undergraduate Chemical Engineering students.
- Monitor degree progress and assist students with academic planning, registration, and university policies.
- Develop advising materials and resources.
- Connect students with appropriate university resources and support services.
- Administer department-level undergraduate research awards, scholarships, and cash prizes, including coordination of nomination and selection processes.
Undergraduate Academic Program Coordination
- Coordinate the McKetta Tutors and Graders Program, including recruitment, student assignments, and performance management.
- Manage the McKetta Peer Advisors Program, including recruitment, training, scheduling, payroll coordination, and performance oversight.
- Coordinate the First-Year Interest Group (FIG) program.
Student Events and Outreach Support
- Support planning and execution of undergraduate student programs and events, including New Student Orientation, Commencement, Explore UT, Parents' Weekend, and the Undergraduate Poster Competition.
- Serve in leadership or support roles for departmental events, programs, and special initiatives.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Prepare statistical reports and respond to ad hoc data requests.
- Monitor graduation rates, degree completion timelines, and other student success metrics.
- Provide departmental leadership with data and analyses to support strategic planning and program assessment.
- Participate in university, college, and advising-related meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
- Attend Academic Counselors Association meetings, college advising meetings, and other relevant forums.
- Serve on departmental, college, or university committees and advisory groups as assigned.
- Master's degree with two (2) years of experience working with students in an academic capacity OR
- Bachelor's degree with four (4) years experience working with college students in an academic capacity
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- More than four years of related academic advising or student services experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting student success and engaging with various student populations.
- Experience supervising and/or training student employees.
- Knowledge of UT academic and student information systems
- Knowledge of UT academic policies and procedures.
- Work is performed in a standard office environment.
- Repetitive use of keyboard at workstation.
- Work outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required.
- Standard business hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Work outside of normal business hours may be required on an occasional basis during peak times
