This position is a full-time academic position within the confines of the Austin-based Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) Program of Case Western Reserve University. The Director of Clinical Education is responsible for arranging, evaluating, and overseeing all clinical education experiences. The person in this position will take an active role in all clinical activities, including course mapping, curriculum development, development of clinical faculty, and teaching in the classroom.
This person will ensure that activities comply with University, School, and Program policies and procedures.
The Director of Clinical Education is expected to devote two extended administrative days to the program each week and to hold regular office hours for students. Administrative days are expected to remain consistent. One administrative day may be adjusted occasionally, with prior approval from the Program Director, when necessary to support program goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide classroom and clinical instruction and student evaluation in a variety of clinical settings as deemed necessary by the Program Director and/or Associate Program Director, organizing other resources to teach as needed, ensuring each course provides students with:
- A schedule of didactic and clinical instruction topics with dates, reading assignments, and evaluation mechanisms, distributed at the beginning of each semester.
- Course goals, objectives, and foci that are correlated between the didactic activities and the clinical application.
- A list of overall course learning objectives, distributed at the beginning of each semester. Review objectives and materials on a regular basis to keep information current and up-to-date.
- A list of learning objectives for each class session, distributed at the beginning of each semester.
- Quizzes and examinations that are designed and evaluated with an eye toward critically- and clinically-oriented thinking and board examinations.
- Effective standardized evaluation instruments to evaluate instructors’ teaching effectiveness based on attainment of learning objectives and that feedback is shared with program direction.
- Collaborate with local anesthesiology departments to support basic science and clinical curriculum.
- In coordination with the Program Director and/or Associate Program Director serve as course instructor for Clinical Correlation course series and Case Presentations, which includes coordination of scheduling, course materials, exams and grades. Continue to reevaluate and enhance the program’s four Anesthesia Clinical Correlation courses (ANES 462, 464, 468, 470), where students deliver weekly case presentations to their peers and the larger medical community.
- Provide substantive guidance for the overall clinical program design and curriculum development for the MSA Program in Austin, TX, ensuring all course goals, objectives and foci are developed according to University and accreditation standards and are correlated appropriately for clinical application. Create or provide a schedule of clinical rotations with dates, reading assignments, requirements, and evaluation mechanisms to be distributed at the beginning of each semester.
Provide organization and guidance to Program Director and faculty in the development, delivery, and coordination of courses, as well as in other academic affairs. In close collaboration with the other Directors of Clinical Education across the network, undertake a systematic semester-end review of courses and student evaluations.
