Job OverviewThe Field Safety Specialist Associate (FSSA) will be responsible for on-the-ground operational and field safety initiatives for Austin. You will be responsible for spearheading development and implementing effective customer-focused safety processes commensurate with the organization’s innovative safety leadership. Additionally, the FSSA is expected to drive continuous improvements of Robotaxi operations through the lens of safety.
As the Field Safety Specialist Associate, you will continually evaluate field safety operations to define and implement processes that are repeatable across different vehicle platforms and locations to ensure the highest level of safety in operations. You will continually improve lessons learned from operations and incidents, including working closely on complex issues with Fleet Operations, Vehicle Engineering, Software, Hardware, and Legal teams to ensure a rigorous, disciplined, risk-based approach.
The role will involve collaborating primarily with Austin and Corporate Operations Teams, EHS & Legal, and Security personnel. The successful candidate will be able to support broader safety efforts including Operational Safety, Safety Planning, Policy, Design, and Risk Assessment activities.
Key Responsibilities- Lead local on‑ground operational safety requirements to drive rapid response to vehicles involved in incidents
- Support incident on‑call duties across the organization with poise and professionalism, including technical issue understanding, problem‑solving, and quick decision‑making; 2nd and 3rd shift rotations as well as weekends and holidays will be required
- Gather data and information
, conduct interviews, and collect evidence as needed for vehicle safety events, potential safety incidents, close‑calls/near‑misses, and concerns involving vehicles during testing and service operations - Establish close collaboration and build trusting relationships with cross‑functional teams in order to advise and support on safety‑critical findings or events
- Collaborate with the training department to develop and execute comprehensive training programs that align with organizational objectives and enhance employee skills and performance
- Champion a strong safety culture across the organization
- Actively promote a “One Team” mindset by prioritizing collaboration and support, readily adapting to and supporting the changing needs of the team and the broader company
- Support the continued development and implementation of successful operational safety and compliance programs
- Ensure relevant operational safety metrics
** are tracked, reported, and used by internal stakeholders to manage safety risks - Perform other duties as required by leadership
- 2–4 years of applicable experience in Operational Safety, Field Safety Operations, Occupational Safety & Health, Law Enforcement, Fire Service, Emergency Management, or a similar role in a fast‑paced environment where ambiguity is viewed as opportunity, or a combination of equivalent education and experience
- Excellent emotional intelligence with an empathetic communication style that fosters connection, collaboration, and motivation
- Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn, Google Workspace, Jira, Confluence, and Slack
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health (OSH), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Emergency Management, or a related field
- Experience in the automotive industry or autonomous driving technology
- Experience as a first responder, including responding to and/or investigating vehicle incidents
- Experience in transportation safety operations, particularly AV or aviation safety
- Experience working with high‑voltage DC systems, lithium‑ion batteries, battery storage systems, and NFPA 70E
- Familiarity with industry safety standards such as AVSC Best Practice documents and the ISO 39000 series
Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate or annual salary only, unless otherwise stated. In addition to base compensation, full‑time roles are eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Commuter and 401K benefits with company matching.
