Element Design and Application Engineer II
ICON is seeking an Element Design and Application Engineer to lead the development of digital design assets and tools used to design with ICON’s next‑generation design‑to‑print platform, Codex. This role serves as the primary technical liaison between the Building+ Construction Science team and Software teams to establish the digital architecture that translates building designs from industry‑standard design tools into ICON’s technology environment to support the design, printing, and construction of 3D printed buildings.
Based at our Austin, TX HQ Campus, this position reports to the Senior Director of Building Performance & Regulatory.
Responsibilities- Lead development of standardized digital design components and parametric building element libraries and define the enhanced BIM standards and data structures that enable automated design validation and construction planning.
- Create and manage Revit families (or similar BIM platform elements) that contain all necessary data for 3D printable systems and construction execution.
- Establish component interaction rules, constraints, and dependency frameworks for seamless design‑to‑print workflows.
- Support the software team to provide workflow feedback for architects and engineers working within the CODEX platform and gather user feedback to continuously improve digital tools and processes.
- Provide training and adoption support of ICON’s digital design tools across ICON teams and external partners, and troubleshoot as needed.
- Act as primary technical liaison between Building+ Construction Science engineering, software, and print teams, translating technical requirements into actionable digital component specifications.
- Coordinate and support validation processes for digital assets and automated design translation workflows.
- Support development of frameworks that translate industry‑standard architectural designs into ICON’s technology environment.
- Establish quality assurance protocols and validation procedures for design elements and software implementation.
- Collaborate with the Software team to establish standards, protocols, and data architectures for integrating design requirements into digital platforms and automated systems for design‑to‑construction integration.
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or related field with strong technical focus.
- 5+ years of experience in architectural design and construction, with demonstrated expertise in building systems and construction methods.
- Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and other BIM software with experience creating and managing complex architectural families.
- Strong understanding of construction and design industry practices including structural systems, architectural design, and construction sequencing.
- Experience with productization of construction elements and translating design concepts into reproducible components.
- Proven project‑management skills with ability to coordinate technical initiatives across multiple stakeholders.
- Experience in construction technology, including advanced manufacturing or prefabrication methods.
- Experience with 3D printing, robotics, or advanced manufacturing technologies in construction applications.
- Background in construction technology development or innovation in building systems.
- Software development experience or familiarity with database design.
