Our client is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to oversee building operations and engineering services at a large commercial facility in Austin, TX. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable facility operations by managing mechanical systems, preventative maintenance programs, and an on-site engineering team. The ideal candidate is a strong technical leader who thrives in complex environments and leads by example.
Job Responsibilities- Lead and oversee all facility maintenance and repair operations, including HVAC, boilers, chillers, plumbing, electrical, and Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Supervise, train, and mentor engineering staff at both journeyman and apprentice levels
- Manage preventative maintenance programs and CMMS workflows
- Monitor and troubleshoot BAS systems, including Niagara Tridium and JACE platforms
- Perform hands-on repairs and diagnostics on chillers, boilers, pumps, motors, controls, sensors, piping, and related equipment
- Conduct equipment condition assessments and provide detailed reports to the Project Manager
- Support monthly operational reporting and participate in management meetings
- Ensure compliance with all safety standards and procedures
- Oversee building egress and access systems, storm drainage, and sanitary sewage systems
- Maintain high levels of customer service while ensuring operational excellence
- Support operations in historic facilities when applicable
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- EPA Universal Certification
- A/C Refrigeration Operator Certificate
- Minimum of 5 years (within the past 7 years) of supervisory experience in facility operations
- Minimum of 2 years (within the past 5 years) of experience working with BAS systems, CMMS, VISTA, and boilers/chillers over 1,200 tons
- Experience managing facilities of 300,000+ square feet
- Strong background in automation and controls systems, including BAS, Niagara Tridium, JACE, lighting systems, and PA systems
- Proven ability to operate, maintain, and repair HVAC, boiler, chiller, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage technical teams
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Must obtain one of the following certifications:
- NAPE Air Conditioning III Operations & Management
- Advanced Boiler Operator Certification
- IUOE Class 2 Stationary Engineer License
