Overview
Transportation Engineer II, III, or IV:
District Portfolio Office (Austin District) — (2600365). The Austin District Central Design Office is seeking a Transportation Engineer II, III, or IV to perform active roadway and multimodal transportation design and project management for internally developed and consultant managed projects, including complex urban and rural safety improvements, infrastructure, mobility projects, innovative intersection improvements, main lane widening, retaining walls, freeway ramp reversals, bridge replacements, and complex drainage projects.
Work involves project planning and oversight and the development of policies and procedures. Interaction with governmental officials, consultants, contractors, and private entities is required. Employees establish their own work plan and priorities to meet objectives. Issues are typically handled at the employee level without routine supervisor referrals.
This position is for ONE Transportation Engineer III, IV, or V. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right to determine the level based on the applicant s experience, skill level, and business needs.
Salary and BenefitsSalary Plan/Grade
- Transportation Engineer II: B25 ($85,000.00 – $/year)
- Transportation Engineer III: B26 ($92,000.00 – $/year)
- Transportation Engineer IV: B27 ($98,000.00 – $/year)

Responsibilities and QualificationsThis position performs complex transportation engineering work in planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees perform work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Manage individual project design and assist with design, drafting, plan development, and related roadway improvement projects
- Develop and review engineering documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans
- Perform complex engineering design such as layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts
- Review and revise schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings, and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting, and traffic management systems
- Evaluate and monitor project plans and schedules to ensure efficient execution
- Monitor consultants progress and quality; review invoices and related documents; prepare supplemental agreements
- Negotiate fees, explain scope of work, and monitor consultant design contracts
- Travel to project locations for on-site reviews, analyses, tests, and technical support
- Other related responsibilities as assigned; this position requires driving a state vehicle

- Perform advanced and complex engineering design work including layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts
Additional Responsibilities for Transportation Engineer IV
- Perform highly advanced and complex engineering design work; oversee and develop plans for complex projects including resource assignments, schedules, scope, communications, quality, and procurement
Education:
Bachelor s degree in engineering or related science (acceptable by TX PELS)
Experience:
Related experience (full-time or prorated part-time); graduate-level education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis
Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid driver s license;
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE). If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas PE within six months of hire and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
