A Field Engineering Technician III at our client is a highly skilled specialist responsible for commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining large-scale 3D printers and related systems safely, efficiently, and compliantly. Technicians at this level work independently on complex tasks, demonstrate strong initiative, and resolve issues with urgency.
They contribute to improving best practices, uphold operational discipline, and frequently serve in leadership capacities—often leading shifts, serving as points of contact between teams, and maintaining stable working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. They are also responsible for training and mentoring Field Engineering Technician I and II team members, helping build their technical capabilities and understanding of the role.
Technicians in this role must be able to operate the printer in all aspects and be experts in at least one of the following domains: print operations, controls, electrical systems, or mechanical systems. Strong documentation, communication, and reliability are essential.
Responsibilities- Connect and disconnect electrical, pneumatic, and network cabling to support printer mobility with minimal supervision.
- Independently troubleshoot and resolve operational, electrical, mechanical, and software issues on printers and related systems.
- Document troubleshooting steps, maintenance, and component replacements accurately in the ticketing system.
- Assist with managing onsite spare parts inventory.
- Build strong working relationships with internal and external customers to ensure smooth project execution and identify root causes of recurring issues.
- Lead coordination of complex tasks while ensuring safety and efficiency across the worksite.
- Maintain printer performance through preventive maintenance, planned upgrades, and routine inspections.
- Monitor printer data regularly (both onsite and remotely) to identify and address potential issues proactively.
- Strongly recommended:
At least 1 year of experience as a Field Engineering Technician II, demonstrating readiness for Technician III responsibilities,
or equivalent experience in a similar role. - Certifications:
OSHA 10, CPR, heavy equipment (provided by the company). - Ability to read wiring diagrams and terminate cables (e.g., camlock power, Ether
CAT cables). - Proven communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to anticipate potential issues and guide others in resolving or preventing them.
- Ability to develop, execute, and enforce standard operating procedures as directed by leadership.
- High-level capability:
Able to plan ahead and mitigate issues before they occur (e.g., directing or supporting others through troubleshooting or preventative scenarios). - Willingness to train other technicians within Field Engineering.
- Subject matter expertise in at least one of the following:
- Print operations
- Mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
- Controls
- Ability to prioritize, adapt, and perform under pressure in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Advanced proficiency with PLCs, VFDs, and electrical troubleshooting, including equipment replacement and manual controls.
- Proficiency in remote device operation and system navigation.
- Ability to thoroughly document issues and communicate effectively during shift handoff.
- Process-oriented mindset: follows SOPs, workflows, and team instructions.
- Experience with various types of welding.
- Ability to work in extreme environments (temperatures >100°F, below freezing, sun exposure, rain, mud, limited electricity, etc.).
- Willingness to travel outside Austin, TX for extended periods and work on-call, nights, and weekends.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
$20/hr - $30/hr
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
