What to Expect
Tesla's 4680 team's goal is to change the cell manufacturing industry by making the most energy dense and cost-effective battery cells in the most high tech, compact and energy efficient factories in the world. Tesla is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to help industrialize our cell manufacturing lines to enable fast and efficient deployment at scale worldwide.
The individual will possess a strong first principles knowledge of dry and wet HVAC system design and use this to help the team optimally integrate manufacturing equipment and factory systems into one cohesive package. The candidate will become the subject matter expert for factory mechanical system design within the cell team, advising manufacturing engineers on how to optimize manufacturing tool design to meet product requirements while also acting as the 4680 team's representative in reviewing central factory system detailed design drawings.
WhatYou'll Do
- Develop mechanical system design concepts, utility locations, loads and system specifications during Conceptual design / Feasibility study phase
- Define / characterize all mechanical interfaces between cell manufacturing equipment and factory central systems and incorporate into cell MFG Factory REVIT Model
- Review / approve factory mechanical system design (airflow diagrams, schematics, P&'s, etc.)
- Conduct cost / benefit analysis for localized utility systems vs. centralized (process cooling water, dust collection, etc.)
- Use first principles to verify / size / optimize design of ducting / piping / central utilities (Chillers, Cooling Towers, Boilers, Fans, air handling units, pumps, heat exchangers, etc.)
- Liaise with local factory engineering teams and regulatory bodies to understand local codes and apply to manufacturing equipment design
- Develop RFQs for MFG utility systems
- Interface with external / internal Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) teams during bid and project execution phases as needed to ensure that designs and specifications meet Tesla Engineering Standards
- Participate in on-field construction and commissioning activities by serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution. Develop in house factory standards / specification documents
- Lead efforts to improve and innovate on mechanical utility system designs based on lessons learned and first principles thinking
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 5+ years of relevant experience
- Familiarity with project management for capital projects and a typical project lifecycle
- 3D Modelling software (Revit) - Essential
- Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D
- Pipe flow modelling (AFT, pipeflow, Aspen, or equivalent)
- Experience with large facility infrastructure design (cell manufacturing, semiconductors, Chemical processing facility, etc.)
- Excellent team and person-to-person communication skills
- Well organized with meticulous attention to detail
