The Hydrology & Hydraulics Section leads the statewide practice with an exciting range of subject matter areas including providing training and specialized project support, maintaining expertise at the leading edge of the state of knowledge and the state of practice, and development of policy and guidance.

Salary Range
  • Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer I: $78,000 – $93,000
  • Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer II: $88,000 – $103,000
  • Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer III: $95,000 – $110,000
  • Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer IV: $105,000 – $128,000
  • Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer V: $118,000 – $135,000

Responsibilities Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer I
  • Performs planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.
  • Coordinates with others to develop, monitor and update integrated project plans and schedules to ensure projects are executed efficiently.
  • Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing out transportation projects.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer II
  • Provides technical assistance in drainage design, resolution of drainage complaints, hydraulics evaluations and other hydrology matters.
  • Acts as consultant project manager, monitoring consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
  • All responsibilities of Engineer I.
Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer III
  • Represents the division at various meetings.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering evaluations and to provide technical support.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • All responsibilities of Engineer II.
Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer IV
  • Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
  • Serves as a primary help desk resource for complex technical and policy issues.
  • Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
  • Develops training courses and/or materials.
  • All responsibilities of Engineer III.
Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer V
  • Develops and implements modifications to existing program of responsibility.
  • Develops short‑term and long‑term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources.
  • Monitors, reviews, and recommends on legislation.
  • All responsibilities of Engineer IV.
Minimum Qualifications Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer I
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. Higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • TX Licensed Prof Engineer optional; must obtain if not licensed.
  • Safety Impact Certificate required.
Hydraulic (Transportation) Engineer II
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science. Higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
