Sr. Power Generation Engineer - Availability, Global Energy
Job | Amazon Data Services, Inc.
Are you passionate about large power infrastructure systems? Do you love to innovate, discover, and apply your knowledge to advance world‑class systems? Do you get excited about the idea of pushing the boundaries of power system availability? We are seeking an experienced electrical engineer with extensive experience in power infrastructure design, including power generation, and reliability and availability modeling to support our growing requirements for novel solutions to delivering power to AWS data centers.
We are looking for candidates with proven ability to influence technical teams, a track record of delivering complex power systems from design and specification through deployment, and a deep understanding of availability modeling.
- Developing availability models and analysis of different power generation sources (including utility sources, diesel generators, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, battery energy storage systems, and renewable energy) to serve data center loads in grid‑connected or grid‑independent configurations.
- Supporting the development of power generation configurations for different applications, including primary, temporary, or backup power.
- Understanding the design and functionality of the global data center fleet, including existing, upcoming, and unique site designs.
- Interpreting, evaluating, and developing single line drawings (SLD), engineering drawings, equipment submittals, equipment specifications, and performance data to advance concepts and solutions.
- Providing feedback to the Design Engineering teams for design revisions for new data centers and to Field Engineering for operational data center upgrades.
- Understanding grid interconnection standards and requirements, including working on microgrid design and controls, and distributed energy resources.
- Working on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
- Being a leader within the group as well as within other teams, offering creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions, and having fun while working hard.
The Power Generation Solutions team creates and delivers product and engineering solutions for power and energy to help advance AWS’ mission to deliver world‑leading cloud services. Our solutions are guided by four main principles: unlocking capacity growth, maintaining high infrastructure uptime, minimizing infrastructure costs, and advancing our net‑zero carbon Climate Pledge. We provide technical input to realize a shared vision and strategy with partner teams and give engineering support across the project or product lifecycle.
We also provide grid analytics and manage and develop models for determining the total energy and water use within our fleet of data centers, working with partners to improve overall performance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
- Knowledge of electrical systems in critical data center operations, including utility substation feeds, transformers, switch gear, VFI Class UPS, DRUPS, PDUs, ATS, STS, SLA/VRLA batteries, diesel/gas turbine generators, and related fuel systems.
- Experience constructing electrical engineering systems, large‑scale power distribution/generation gear, and mechanical engineering systems such as cooling systems.
- Experience with availability modeling software (Relia Soft or similar), familiarity with FMEA, outage data, and maintenance data of key electrical distribution equipment, energy storage equipment, and power generation equipment.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, single and three‑line diagrams, P&, submittals, sequence of operations, and mechanical and electrical drawing packages.
- Analytical skills to evaluate outage rates, probability of outages, MTBF, MTTR, and other metrics to assess power availability.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer License.
- 10+ years of experience in data…
