General Description
Performs advanced tasks related to critical infrastructure, including networks (LAN, WAN, VPN, and VoIP), servers, operating systems, and applications. Serves as a subject matter expert for complex servers, operating systems, and networks. Leads or participates in technical design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, and recovery procedures for mission‑critical systems. Participates in network design, installation, training, monitoring, and hardware analysis for improvements. Server, operating systems, networks, and applications may be hosted on‑premises or in the cloud.
Works under limited supervision with significant latitude for using initiative and making independent judgments. Reports to the Information Technology Infrastructure and Operations Manager.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitors networks, firewalls, servers, operating systems, and takes corrective measures to ensure efficient performance.
- Evaluates various networks, servers, and operating systems to identify strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits to the agency.
- Participates in performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of agency systems.
- Configures automation routines using scripting and other programming languages.
- Engages in the administration of agency rack systems, computer host systems, and network infrastructures, including air conditioning units, UPS (Uninterrupted Power Systems), and fire protection systems.
- Participates in the development and testing of procedures required to save and recover servers, operating systems, applications, and networks from hardware and software failures.
- Evaluates technologies and agency requirements to develop and recommend long‑term server and networking plans.
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with major coursework in computer science, computer information systems, or management information systems. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.
- At least four (4) years of work experience in network administration or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of server, storage, and networking hardware.
- Experience with Storage Area Networks (SAN).
- Experience with cloud‑based Microsoft products:
- Microsoft Azure
- Microsoft Entra (Azure Active Directory)
- Microsoft Endpoint Manager
- Technical skills:
- Experience managing a Microsoft server environment including Windows Server Administration, Hyper‑V, Active Directory, and Remote Desktop Services.
- Working knowledge of telecommunications systems.
- Experience installing and maintaining Dell networking equipment.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Power Shell or equivalent.
- Experience managing network infrastructure (switches, routers, advanced networking).
- At least six (6) years of work experience in network administration or equivalent experience.
- Experience in Storage Area Networks (SAN).
- Experience supporting both custom applications and commercial off‑the‑shelf applications, including document management systems.
- A minimum of four (4) years' experience in managing a Microsoft Hyper‑V cluster environment, including:
- Proficient in managing IIS.
- Implementing IIS baseline configuration.
- Conducting root cause analysis in network and development environments.
