The Manager of Environmental Compliance & Sustainability serves as the environmental subject matter expert (SME) for shipyard operations. This role owns environmental compliance, permitting, and regulatory engagement, ensuring operations meet all applicable environmental requirements while supporting safe, predictable production at industrial scale.

This position is accountable for translating environmental regulations into practical, executable controls on the deck plates. The role balances regulatory rigor with operational reality, ensuring environmental programs protect the business without unnecessarily constraining throughput, schedule, or cost.

Responsibilities
  • Environmental Compliance & Permitting
    • Own environmental compliance programs across shipyard operations, including air permits and emissions compliance (coatings, blasting, equipment, point sources); water and wastewater discharges; stormwater permitting and SWPPP development, implementation, and inspections; hazardous and non‑hazardous waste management; soil, materials, and spill prevention controls.
    • Ensure permits are maintained, conditions are met, and reporting requirements are completed accurately and on time.
    • Lead permit applications, renewals, modifications, and compliance demonstrations.
  • Regulatory Interface & Audit Readiness
    • Serve as primary point of contact with environmental regulators, including EPA and applicable state and local agencies.
    • Lead environmental inspections, audits, and regulator interactions.
    • Prepare and manage responses to regulatory findings, notices, or corrective actions.
    • Maintain audit‑ready documentation and records.
  • Environmental Risk Identification & Control
    • Identify environmental risks associated with shipyard activities and expansions.
    • Proactively develop mitigation strategies to prevent violations, spills, releases, or shutdowns.
    • Support environmental aspects of incident response and regulatory notifications.
    • Advise leadership on environmental risk tradeoffs tied to production decisions.
  • Sustainability & Environmental Performance
    • Advance sustainability initiatives with measurable outcomes: waste reduction, recycling and material reuse, hazardous material minimization, consumable reduction.
    • Partner with Operations and Supply Chain to reduce environmental cost drivers without reducing compliance or protection.
    • Track environmental KPIs and trends to drive continuous improvement.
  • Environmental SME Support to Operations
    • Act as technical authority for environmental questions across Production, Facilities, Capital Programs, and EHS.
    • Translate environmental requirements into practical work instructions and controls.
    • Support planning of new processes, equipment, and facilities to ensure environmental compliance is designed in— not bolted on.
    • Provide environmental input to capital projects, expansions, and major process changes.
  • Training & Awareness
    • Support development and delivery of environmental training for employees and leaders.
    • Ensure personnel understand environmental responsibilities relevant to their work.
    • Reinforce environmental accountability through clear expectations and field engagement.
  • Team Leadership & Governance
    • Lead environmental specialists, coordinators, or technicians.
    • Establish governance for environmental procedures, changes, and exception handling.
    • Build scalable environmental systems that support yard growth.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years experience in environmental compliance within shipyards, heavy manufacturing, or industrial operations.
