What to Expect

Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Manufacturing Engineer who will lead the design and implementation of automated material handling systems for new and existing factories and programs s position will be based in Gigafactory Texas near Austin, TX.
We look for a candidate who excels in a demanding and fast‑paced environment, working as part of a smart, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects in any industry today. Manufacturing Engineers on the Material Flow Engineering team (MFE) are responsible for developing solutions for the efficient and reliable flow of material to the Tesla manufacturing lines.

As a manufacturing engineer you are responsible for managing and owning automated material handling projects from “cradle to grave” – concept, design, install, commissioning, ramp, hand‑over to production, and continuous improvement of equipment such as automated storage systems (ASRS), final assembly conveyance (car bodies, batteries, drive units), automated lifts, material‑handling robot cells, etc.

Besides owning the design and technical scope of a project, Senior Manufacturing Engineers also provide mentorship and guidance to other engineers and stakeholders within Tesla. The role is to ensure that MFE systems’ designs meet Tesla’s goals and objectives. The engineer also handles project‑management functions such as timelines, budgets, vendor coordination, factory layout, construction, packaging, and collaboration with production teams.

What You’ll Do
  • Design automated material handling solutions to establish new and improved material flows throughout the facilities – from material arrival at docks, delivery to line‑side locations, transport between internal manufacturing lines, buffer/stored systems, and robotic material handling.
  • Drive material‑flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems.
  • Develop analytical models to establish design and performance criteria.
  • Investigate and research advanced technologies to optimize material‑handling equipment and systems.
  • Concept development, detailed engineering design, and collaboration with system build and integration.
  • Develop RFQs, technical equipment specifications, procedures, and proper documentation.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of practical automated material‑handling and process equipment design experience in AS/RS, electric monorail systems, conveyance, mobile robotics (AGVs or AMRs), and robotic material‑handling.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Solid Works, CATIA or similar modeling software.
  • A solid engineering background with hands‑on design and development experience.
  • A passion to work with automation equipment and design processes around it.
  • Ability to lead a project from concept through to installation and hand‑over while working in a close‑knit team environment.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, material‑flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; ability to manage several complex projects at the same time with high degrees of variation and uncertainty.
