Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Global Metrology Systems Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated Manager to oversee the GFTX team operations and drive excellence in manufacturing high-quality products by scaling Tesla metrology/inspection systems that make up the Tesla Battery Cell and Energy factories, manufacturing our groundbreaking 4680 battery cells at high speed.
In this dynamic role, you'll lead a world-class team of engineers and technicians, collaborating cross-functionally with global teams, operations, engineering, production, maintenance, and design to develop and scale up various robust metrology/inspection systems from the ground up.
Your focus will be on operational excellence, production readiness, and Industry 4.0 transformation of metrology systems across manufacturing environments, fostering continuous improvement, and performance management of the team. You will drive installation, commissioning, line ramps, and continuous improvement through structured problem solving and data-driven decision making. The ideal candidate thrives on solving complex challenges, optimizing metrology processes, and mentoring others, coupled with the drive for relentless improvement in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.
What You'll Do
* Lead, mentor, and oversee a team of metrology system engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of technical excellence and accountability, while partnering with manufacturing, quality, process engineering, and data teams to support NPI, engineering changes, and production targets
* Drive operational excellence by defining and tracking KPIs (uptime, cycle time, throughput, OEE), championing lean principles, and leading CAPA processes across metrology systems
* Build a structured data driven problem-solving culture across the team using A3, DMAIC, and PDCA frameworks; coach team members and facilitate cross-functional resolution of complex issues. Lead data-driven root cause investigations for system failures, measurement excursions, and production escapes using structured methodologies (8D, 5-Why, FTA, Fishbone) and share across global teams
* Drive data-driven decision making by leveraging SPC, statistical analysis, and real-time dashboards to guide priorities on system performance, capacity, and quality
* Own manufacturing readiness reviews ensuring all metrology systems meet key metrology capability requirements (GR&R, MSA, Cpk) and are fully qualified before production release
* Lead PFMEA development and risk management for metrology processes, maintaining PFMEA as a living document updated with field and global performance and lessons learned
* Manage end-to-end installation, commissioning, and qualification of metrology systems including FAT/SAT activities, playbooks, and vendor coordination
* Drive metrology readiness during line ramps from pilot to high-volume manufacturing - identifying and resolving capacity, throughput, and reliability bottlenecks while scaling support and spare parts coverage
* Define and execute an Industry 4.0 roadmap integrating metrology systems with MES, SCADA, and factory data infrastructure for closed-loop quality control, digital thread enablement, and emerging technology adoption
* Own documentation and reporting including SOPs, work instructions, commissioning records, system qualification reports, lessons learned, and executive-level status reporting on metrology operations performance, risks, and ramp progress to support scaling up for future factories
What You'll Bring
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
* 5+ years in metrology, manufacturing operations, or production/process engineering, with 2+ years in a management or lead role
* Strong understanding of GR&R, MSA, measurement uncertainty, and SPC
* Strong data analytics skills - comfortable with SPC, statistical analysis, dashboarding tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP, Power BI, Tableau, Grafana)
* Demonstrated expertise in root cause analysis methodologies (8D, 5-Why, FTA, Fishbone, Kepner-Tregoe). Proven ability to drive structured problem-solving disciplines across teams
* Hands-on experience driving PFMEA, production readiness reviews, and operational KPIs
* Experience with installation, commissioning, and qualifications of complex measurement systems. Proven track record managing line ramps from pilot through high-volume manufacturing
* Experience with metrology platforms (X-rays, Optical and vision systems, laser-based systems, in-line inspection, etc.)
* Working knowledge of Industry 4.0 concepts, MES integration, IoT, and factory data architecture
* Excellent communication, reporting, project management, and ability to drive execution under pressure
Compensation and Benefits
Benefits
