Hazmat Safety Specialist I
Provides technical skills in the operation and support of environmental health and safety programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies. Responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. Assists faculty and staff regarding the interpretation and implementation of health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.
Responsibilities include:
- Responsible for the safe collection, handling, and processing of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials for the University of Texas at Austin campuses following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures.
- Responsible for maintaining waste facility cleanliness, conducting inspections, monitoring, and testing of sites, and the collection environmental samples under the direction of senior environmental staff to comply with permit and regulatory requirements of storm water, wastewater, SPCC, PST and other environmental programs.
- Responds to environmental health and safety issues, complaints, and emergencies including hazardous/non-hazardous spills, odors, contamination, and injuries/exposures. Must be able to accurately gather information related to the potential impacts to the campus community, the environment, or facility safety or building infrastructure and clearly communicate findings to senior staff or management. Must be able to resolve incidents with support from senior staff or management.
May perform incident investigations and prepare reports of observations and findings. - Maintains accurate up-to-date records of the collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures. Participate in the review and development of standard operating procedures with direct oversight from senior staff or management.
- Perform other related functions as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with normal trade practices and is inspected for conformity to standards, quality and quantity by journey-level employees or supervisor. Attends staff meetings, safety training and meetings. Must wear respiratory/personal protective equipment (PPE) where required and performing duties. Required to carry University cell phone.
Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in science, natural science, engineering, environmental engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences or occupational health and industrial hygiene or related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
The job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
Salary range is $46,000+ depending on qualifications.
