At Skyways, we are building a new form of air transportation that will transform how goods, and eventually people, move around the world. Backed by fresh funding and a major STRATFI contract from the U.S. Air Force, we're uniquely positioned to lead the next generation of autonomous aviation.
Our fully autonomous unmanned aircraft are already flying with commercial customers, and we're moving quickly from prototype to scaled deployment. Unlike traditional aerospace companies, we combine rapid hardware iteration with real world operations, giving our engineers the opportunity to see their work designed, built, tested, and flown.
Skyways is a fast growing startup based in Austin, Texas, backed by Y Combinator and leading Silicon Valley investors. If you're excited about solving difficult engineering problems and helping build the future of flight, we'd love to meet you.
The OpportunitySkyways is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, RF/EMI to ensure our aircraft operate reliably in complex electromagnetic environments. You'll own RF integration, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) across our aircraft, working closely with electrical, avionics, systems, and flight test engineers from early architecture through certification.
This is a highly hands on role where you'll spend time both designing solutions and working directly with aircraft hardware in the lab, on the flight line, and during testing. Your work will directly impact aircraft reliability, communication performance, and mission success.
What You'll Do:- Own RF, EMI, and EMC performance across avionics, communications, payloads, navigation systems, and power electronics.
- Lead electromagnetic compatibility efforts from early design through flight testing and certification.
- Diagnose and resolve EMI issues during system integration, ground testing, and flight testing.
- Develop practical mitigation strategies including grounding, shielding, filtering, cable routing, bonding, and enclosure design.
- Define antenna placement, RF hardware integration, and electromagnetic architecture across the aircraft.
- Partner with electrical, systems, mechanical, and software engineers to influence system design before problems occur.
- Plan and execute in house RF and EMI testing while developing repeatable validation procedures.
- Support external pre compliance and certification testing, including DO 160 and MIL STD 461 when applicable.
- Analyze test data and drive corrective actions to improve aircraft performance and reliability.
- Work directly with flight hardware to validate solutions in real world operating environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of electrical engineering experience with significant responsibility for RF, EMI, or EMC in complex hardware systems.
- Strong understanding of electromagnetic compatibility fundamentals, coupling mechanisms, grounding, shielding, and filtering.
- Experience working with RF systems including radios, antennas, GPS, telemetry, or high speed communications.
- Hands on experience using spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, and other RF test equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting integrated hardware systems across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Ability to translate theoretical electromagnetic concepts into practical engineering solutions.
- Experience developing aircraft, spacecraft, or other safety critical systems.
- Familiarity with DO 160, MIL STD 461, FCC, or other EMC compliance standards.
- Experience influencing PCB layout and electrical architecture for EMI robustness.
- Flight test or field deployment experience.
- Experience with antenna design, propagation, or RF simulation tools.
- Background spanning both RF design and system level EMI troubleshooting.
Relocation assistance provided.
Ready to help build the future of autonomous aviation? We'd love to hear from you.
Due to U.S. government contract requirements, this role is limited to U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or candidates from specific countries authorized under applicable export control regulations.
