Mechanical Designer
This long-term, full-time Mechanical Designer role supports product development in the smart building technologies domain, focusing on advanced lighting sources. You will take products from concept through production, with a strong emphasis on sheet metal and injection-molded plastic design. This position suits a hands-on, detail-oriented designer who collaborates closely with engineers on complex designs while independently owning smaller assemblies from initial design through validation.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with engineering teams to develop mechanical designs from concept through production release.
- Create complex 3D CAD models, primarily using Creo, with occasional use of Solid Works.
- Translate engineering requirements into manufacturable mechanical designs.
- Design and develop sheet metal components, injection molded plastic parts, and basic electronic packaging solutions.
- Own and execute the complete design of simple assemblies consisting of approximately 5–8 components.
- Develop part and assembly designs, including material selection, detailed drawings, and tolerance analysis.
- Conduct peer reviews of mechanical designs and support design revisions based on feedback.
- Support prototype development, including supplier identification, part sourcing, and validation activities.
- Build mechanical prototypes and test setups using basic shop and hand tools.
- Partner closely with engineers on higher-complexity designs and contribute to continuous improvement of design practices.
- Utilize PLM tools such as Windchill to manage design data and documentation where applicable.
- Support manufacturing-related activities for sheet metal, injection molding, machining, and 3D printing processes as needed.
- Associate degree (2-year) in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Experience in mechanical design across the product lifecycle, from concept through production.
- Proficiency in Creo or Solid Works, with a willingness to learn and primarily use Creo.
- Demonstrated experience with 3D modeling, including complex part and assembly design.
- Hands-on experience with sheet metal design and injection molded plastic part design.
- Ability to translate engineering requirements into manufacturable designs and detailed drawings.
- Experience performing tolerance analysis for parts and assemblies.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers on complex mechanical designs.
- Basic hands-on mechanical capabilities and experience using shop and hand tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and high attention to detail in all aspects of design work.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Windchill or similar Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
- Experience with electronics packaging design and integration into mechanical assemblies.
- Experience working with vendors and suppliers for prototype and production parts.
- Ability to lead small teams on defined design projects or subassemblies.
- Experience seeing products through to production, including support for manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods such as sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, machining, and 3D printing.
- Interest in smart building technologies and advanced lighting solutions.
- Strong communication skills for participating in peer reviews and cross-functional collaboration.
This role is fully onsite at a smart building and advanced lighting technology facility. You will work closely with engineers, designers, and cross-functional teams in a collaborative environment focused on innovation and high-quality product development. The primary design tools include Creo as the main CAD platform and Solid Works as a secondary tool, supported by Windchill for product lifecycle management. You will engage with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, machining, and 3D printing, and you will have access to shop areas for building prototypes and test setups using standard mechanical tools.
The position offers a long-term engagement with enhanced benefits, including two weeks of paid time off and eight company holidays, in a professional, hands-on…
