The Senior Planning Engineer provides transmission planning analysis and electrical engineering support for the development, expansion, operation, and reliability of a high-voltage electric transmission system. This role performs power system studies, evaluates system performance, recommends transmission solutions and upgrades, supports generation and load interconnections, maintains planning models, and collaborates with engineering and operations teams to support system reliability and long-term planning objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and perform power system analyses, including:
- Steady-state load flow studies
- Dynamic and transient stability analyses
- Interpret study results and develop recommendations to support system reliability, performance improvements, and infrastructure investments.
- Manage transmission planning, generation interconnection, and load interconnection projects.
- Develop, maintain, and validate power flow, dynamic, and short-circuit planning models.
- Participate in industry working groups, stakeholder meetings, and technical forums as required.
- Coordinate with internal teams, utilities, independent power producers, developers, consultants, and other industry stakeholders on planning and interconnection activities.
- Support compliance efforts related to applicable reliability standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Provide planning support to system operations, engineering, and capital project teams.
- Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for transmission planning activities.
- Mentor junior engineering staff and provide technical guidance on complex assignments.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to planning methodologies, tools, and processes.
- Stay informed of emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and industry trends impacting transmission planning.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in electric transmission planning, power system studies, or related utility engineering functions.
- Strong understanding of transmission planning principles, electric system reliability, and interconnection processes.
- Experience working within the electric utility, transmission, renewable energy, consulting, or power generation industries.
- Familiarity with applicable reliability standards and regulatory requirements.
- Advanced proficiency with industry-standard power system analysis software, such as:
- TARA
- ASPEN One Liner
- Similar transmission planning tools
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting transmission expansion planning, renewable energy integration, or large-scale interconnection projects.
- Experience developing planning tools, automation solutions, or advanced analytical processes.
- Prior experience serving as a technical lead or mentoring junior engineers.
- Pay range: $105k-$130k plus 10% bonus. Flexible on base salary.
