Job Title: Plumbing Graduate Engineer / Engineer in Training (EIT)
Location: Austin, TX
Reports To: Principal or Associate Principal of the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Department
Position Type: Full-Time

JOB PURPOSE

This role performs engineering design for small to medium projects, and for select segments of larger, complex assignments, in the plumbing engineering discipline. It applies engineering concepts, principles, and methods across a range of project environments. Additional experience in mechanical engineering is a plus. An experienced Mechanical and/or Plumbing Engineer may provide guidance, but the Graduate Engineer must exercise judgment in interpreting and adapting methods to specific cases.

Completed work is initially reviewed for technical soundness and compliance with standard engineering practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and functions may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Design
  • Prepares and maintains design drawings, diagrams, charts, plans, and permits under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Performs preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates and provides technical information to clients through contact with inter- and intra-departmental personnel, government agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, and address concerns.
  • Uses AutoCAD and Revit to prepare drawings and provide technical advice and guidance on assigned work. Develops, analyzes, and generates technical reports, correspondence, and official documents.
  • Uses engineering and mathematical references, tables, charts, and computer equipment to perform professional engineering studies, calculations, analyses, and estimates.
  • Conducts field observations of contractor work to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs statistical analysis to ensure compliance with established specifications.
  • Identifies problems or opportunities through the collection and analysis of data.
  • Interprets and condenses field notes to prepare and/or oversee the preparation of plans and drawings.
  • Maintains an accurate filing and records system for projects from initiation through close-out.
  • Operates computer-aided engineering design and analysis programs and tools.
  • Understands, applies, and maintains compliance with regulatory and industry standards, including the International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC), Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and International Building Code (IBC).
Project Planning
  • Acts on technical matters in the assigned field of expertise and recommends engineering solutions.
  • Creates an effective plan for developing the work product.
  • Prioritizes tasks.
  • Creates workflow milestones for personal project production.
  • Anticipates project constraints and creates alternative plans.
  • Monitors project status against the plan and reports on the results.
  • Performs contract administration and construction observations for minor projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited four‑year university plus a minimum of three (3) years of engineering work experience.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination, or in the process of taking the exam.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with corporate managers, end users, and engineers from other departments.
WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday; this position is expected to arrive no later than 9 a.m. and leave after approximately eight (8) hours of time working. Depending on task needs, overtime may be needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is largely a sedentary role, with mobility required for pre‑design site visits and/or construction site visits.

DIRECT REPORTS

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
