Opportunity

Black Veatch has an exciting opportunity within our Infrastructure Advisory Technical Delivery Team. The Geothermal Senior Consultant serves as a hands‑on technical lead supporting engineering design, technical evaluations, and multidisciplinary integration of utility‑scale geothermal surface facilities and associated infrastructure. In addition to core responsibilities, there may be opportunities for the individual to contribute additional time supporting similar project work aligned with their technical expertise.

The role focuses on surface systems (wellhead to point of interconnection) and the interfaces between subsurface resources and the electric grid, translating technical inputs into actionable design solutions.

The position supports technical diligence, feasibility studies, FEL/FEED engineering, and detailed design while collaborating across subsurface, process/mechanical, and power systems disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute technical due diligence, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for geothermal surface and wellfield interface systems.
  • Develop technical deliverables defining assumptions, risks, constraints, and recommended paths forward.
  • Support Owner’s Engineer / Independent Engineer scopes through disciplined technical review.
  • Translate subsurface data (well performance, reservoir behavior) into actionable surface system inputs.
  • Lead or support engineering of surface systems including heat rejection, steam/brine handling, and reinjection systems.
  • Develop and review mass and energy balances, PFDs, and equipment definitions.
  • Support FEL/FEED deliverables, Basis of Design documents, and system layouts.
  • Participate in HAZOP, operability reviews, and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical oversight of surface–subsurface interface design including wellhead and reinjection systems.
  • Integrate subsurface inputs including flow, pressure, temperature, and fluid chemistry into design basis.
  • Support conceptual and FEED‑stage design of wellhead piping, control systems, and reinjection networks.
  • Ensure alignment between reservoir strategy and surface system performance.
  • Identify and communicate interface risks between reservoir behavior and surface system design.
  • Support interconnection studies by defining plant assumptions and coordinating across disciplines.
  • Provide inputs for power flow and hosting capacity studies and review results.
  • Evaluate impacts of interconnection constraints on plant configuration and auxiliary loads.
  • Assist in identifying grid upgrade considerations and impacts to design.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, processes, tools, models, and other deliverables to communicate analysis and recommendations.
  • Support development of proposals, including strategy, scope and fee, and other business development activities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and help mentor lower‑ and mid‑level professionals.
  • Coordinate with subsurface/ reservoir, process, mechanical, electrical, power systems, environmental, permitting, and project management teams to ensure high‑quality deliverables.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience across feasibility, FEED, detailed design, and construction support.
  • Hands‑on experience with surface systems and wellhead/reinjection integration.
  • Experience supporting technical evaluations or Owner’s Engineer roles.
  • Experience with thermal/process system design and fluid handling; multidisciplinary coordination and technical risk identification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent.
  • Five or more (5+) years’ experience in geothermal and/or thermal power generation projects.
  • Experience with advanced geothermal systems or emerging technologies.
  • Exposure to interconnection studies or grid coordination.
