The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth worldwide, ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, and other facilities. The team is responsible for architecting and implementing AWS’s global environmental programs: defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing, and metrics;
providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site‑specific development strategies that enable the construction and operation of AWS data centers and infrastructure. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, develop and execute site‑specific environmental permitting strategies, support environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data center operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.
A successful candidate has a proven track record of delivering multiple, high‑priority projects with tight timelines that require strong communication with partner teams, outside consultants, counsel, and regulatory agencies. The candidate must have a deep understanding of multi‑media United States environmental permitting, remediation, and compliance requirements associated with large‑scale infrastructure, including experience with Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act (CWA) 404 and NPDES permitting, Threatened & Endangered Species, RCRA, SPCC, and SARA Title III.
Key Responsibilities- Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data center siting and development strategies and site‑specific project delivery.
- Lead technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, natural, biological and cultural resource evaluations, and noise assessments.
- Deliver environmental permits, approvals, and plans to enable on‑time and compliant construction and operations for new data center locations and expansion of existing sites.
- Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners.
- Coordinate with partner teams including Real Estate, Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, and others to optimize site designs considering natural resource or operational constraints.
