Job Description & How to Apply Below

Technik Engineering is seeking an experienced Senior Welding Engineer for a Lunar Welding Technology Development program funded by NASA through an SBIR. The project focuses on advanced joining for vacuum and lunar-surface environments, including laser welding, welding metallurgy, integrated nondestructive examination (NDE), high-vacuum design, and data-driven weld-quality evaluation.

The engineer will support requirements and concept-of-operations development; laser, optics, and welding-process trade studies; alloy, joint, and defect assessment; NDE architecture and validation; correlation of inspection results with weld metallurgy; and thermal, dust-mitigation, and manufacturability considerations. Initial work emphasizes engineering analysis and validation, with later development expected to include prototype hardware, physical welding, vacuum testing, and qualification.

Initial work emphasizes engineering analysis and validation, with later development expected to include prototype hardware, physical welding, vacuum testing, and qualification.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide senior-level technical leadership for lunar welding technology development, welding metallurgy, fabrication, and advanced joining processes.
  • Develop, review, and support qualification of welding procedures, specifications, WPS/PQR documentation, and inspection/test plans.
  • Evaluate weldability, filler-metal selection, heat input, joint design, distortion, residual stress, and metallurgical performance.
  • Provide expertise for stainless steels, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, nickel alloys, and dissimilar-metal joining.
  • Assess fusion-zone and heat-affected-zone metallurgy, including cracking, porosity, lack of fusion, embrittlement, and intermetallic formation.
  • Support high-vacuum/UHV welded systems, including weld design, cleanliness, inspection, repair, and leak-integrity considerations.
  • Support laser, GTAW/TIG, automated, robotic, and other precision joining processes as applicable.
  • Interpret NDE results and weld acceptance criteria; correlate inspection findings with metallurgy and expected failure mechanisms.
  • Participate in process and personnel qualification, supplier reviews, technical readiness reviews, and root-cause investigations.
  • Interface with fabricators, laboratories, research institutions, customers, and NASA technical personnel as required by the project.
  • Prepare and review specifications, technical reports, test plans, qualification records, and customer/government deliverables.
  • Help establish reusable Technik welding-engineering practices for future NASA, aerospace, defense, high-vacuum, energy, and advanced-manufacturing programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 7+ years of professional welding engineering, welding metallurgy, fabrication engineering, or related industrial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, or qualifying welding procedures and associated technical records.
  • Strong knowledge of welding metallurgy, weld-defect mechanisms, inspection methods, and practical weld-quality evaluation.
  • Experience working within formal engineering, quality, configuration-control, and document-control systems.
  • Ability to independently evaluate complex welding problems and provide technically defensible…
