Position Information

TxDOT's Traffic Safety Division is looking for a Deputy Division Director based in Austin, TX. We are seeking a leader with strong interpersonal skills to assist the division director in leading and overseeing the diverse and high-profile programs and efforts in the Traffic Safety Division, including traffic management, traffic engineering and operations, crash data and analysis, behavioral traffic safety, and the traffic safety special crews, all tied together with the common goal of improving safety for the traveling public across our great state of Texas.

This is more than a job – you will be involved in continual collaboration with internal and external partners statewide and nationally, to include TxDOT's 25 Districts, as we stay on the forefront of emerging technologies and innovation.

Assists in directing and managing all activities of the Traffic Safety Division to include traffic engineering, traffic management, traffic safety, crash data and special crews programs. Recommends policies, procedures, staffing and funding requirements needed to execute division programs. Reports to the Director of the Traffic Safety Division. Work requires extensive contact with high-level executives, governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct responsibility for the work product.

Essential

Duties
  • Assists in overseeing and directing the statewide traffic engineering and safety programs, the traffic maintenance special crews, and the development of traffic management and intelligent transportation systems.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policy and procedures for statewide traffic operations initiatives.
  • Assists in directing coordination between districts, divisions, federal, and state agencies on engineering design activities.
  • Assists in directing the design and preparation of standards, manuals, and special details for all types of traffic control devices in use on the state transportation system.
  • Assists in directing the enhancement and evaluation of crash record information systems.
  • Assists in overseeing and directing risk assessments in areas of responsibility of potential fraud, waste and abuse, and assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures to identify, prevent and eliminate fraud, waste and abuse.
  • Assists in overseeing and directing the development of short-range and long-range plans for traffic operations.
  • Recommends staffing and funding for department traffic operations activities and assists in the development, preparation, and monitoring of the traffic operations budget.
  • Represents the department at national, state, and local levels concerning traffic operations and engineering activities.
  • Reviews proposed legislation and assists in directing the implementation of legislation affecting traffic operations activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
