The position provides a positive visitor experience while monitoring and assisting with security at Texas Science & Natural History Museum. The role involves interacting with visitors, overseeing building facilities during museum operating hours and during special events. This is a part‑time position (approximately 15–20 hours per week).
Purpose: To ensure a safe and pleasant experience for staff and visitors while protecting the University s collections and property.
Responsibilities- Assist in the safety and security of the museum by monitoring and protecting visitors, exhibitions, building, and grounds.
- Provide clear guidance, direction, and information to ensure all visitors have a positive and welcoming experience; share knowledge of museum amenities, exhibitions, and events with visitors.
- Document and report observed interactions with exhibits and collections; address inappropriate behavior confidently and calmly. Report missing or damaged objects, unusual building conditions, safety concerns, and fire hazards to supervisors.
- Follow museum policies and security procedures to assist in opening/closing, daily operations, and during special events.
- Participate in training programs to improve knowledge of the museum, security practices, and customer service skills.
- Operate freight elevator and manual warehouse equipment; assist as a team member to set up furniture and equipment for events; perform other manual duties as assigned.
- Serve as initial responder in emergencies; know evacuation procedures and routes; contact a supervisor when appropriate; assist in evacuation of the public and staff during fire alarms or emergencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED
- At least one year of prior experience in a museum or other cultural organization
- Ability to work well with the public and interact with a wide variety of people
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
- Promotes a collaborative climate that welcomes all individuals to the museum
- Ability to calmly organize and effectively direct in emergency situations
- Ability to work effectively within a team and individually
- Demonstrated professional demeanor and personal initiative
- Availability to work weekends and evenings
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate
- Bachelor s Degree
- Educational background or interest in science and natural history
- Familiarity with Texas Science & Natural History Museum (formerly Texas Memorial Museum)
- One to three years security experience in a museum or similar setting
- Current AED, CPR, and First Aid certification
$20 per hour
Working Conditions- Manual dexterity and occasional keyboard use while at a desk
- Climbing stairs and ladders
- Ability to stand and walk for several hours
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs
- Occasional work around exhibits and equipment
Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday consistently; some evening event shifts. Part time at approximately 15–20 hours per week.
