Program Assistant (Customer Service Representative I)

Texas Historical Commission — Fort Griffin State Historic Site

Location:1701 N US Highway 283, Albany, TX

Salary:$3,350.00/month

Responsibilities
  • Provide quality customer services for visitors, volunteers, community service workers, and the general public.
  • Provide information via telephone and email; provide quality customer service in a courteous, efficient, and positive manner; continually inform and promote the sites and Texas Historical Commission's mission and programs.
  • Collect admission fees; conducts cash and credit card transactions, gift shop store sales, and facility use fees; generate revenue reports; operate software programs including point of sale programs, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel; assist with ancillary product sales and inventory.
  • Complete minor maintenance duties, including daily and routine cleaning of interpretive and office areas, as well as restroom facilities, and assist with site vehicle cleaning and refueling.
  • Open and close the site's facilities as required.
  • Introduce patrons (individuals and groups of all ages, including K-12 school groups) to the site with an emphasis on the history and legacy of Fort Griffin.
  • Facilitate interpretive tours tailored to suit the ages and needs of visitors.
  • Welcome visitors to the site, be familiar with the site's history, architecture, exhibits, and area attractions, and respond intelligently and succinctly to visitors' questions.
  • Assist with conducting and promoting regularly scheduled and special public and private events on- and off-site, including assisting with hands-on education outreach events and programs.
  • Capture and document event and program participation as needed to support content creation.
  • Adhere to an established work schedule with regular attendance.
  • Follow all THC safety guidelines/procedures and ethics requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent
  • Minimum one year work experience as a customer service representative, museum or historic site tour guide, and/or working in education outreach
  • Work experience in general clerical, cash handling, sales, inventory and reporting
  • The ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive a state vehicle
  • Required to travel up to 5% of the work period
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with various software packages such as Microsoft and related Point of Sale systems
  • Willingness to learn or gain experience in the museum or historic site field
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of office practices and administrative procedures
  • Effective verbal and written communication, human relations, and organizational skills
  • Skill in providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers
  • Skill in operating a personal computer with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software
  • Skill in the use of custodial materials and chemicals and the operation of custodial equipment
  • Ability to follow established security and safety guidelines and procedures for staff and visitors
  • Ability to collect fees, handle cash and credit card transactions accurately, and account for revenues collected using Clover
  • Ability to work in a setting requiring self-motivation/cooperative decision-making and to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines while maintaining extreme attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to adapt successfully and quickly to change and deliver quality results in a timely manner
  • Ability to plan, organize, and work independently, as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
