Job DetailsThe Finance Business Partner is responsible for managing the end-to-end financial operations for the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery. This includes financial planning and analysis, budget development, performance monitoring, and post-award grants management. The role also leads the Neuroscience finance team, providing oversight, mentorship, and ensuring efficient financial operations across all funding streams (state, grant, gift, and clinical).
PurposeThe Finance Business Partner is a key strategic and operational leader supporting the financial health of the Neurology and Neurosurgery departments at Dell Medical School. This role ensures sound financial decision-making and alignment of financial resources to departmental and institutional goals. Partnering closely with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders—including HR, Operations, Supply Chain, and Sponsored Projects—the Finance Business Partner provides expert guidance in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and grants management to drive operational excellence and strategic impact.
Responsibilities- Develop and maintain forecasting and budgeting models.
- Analyze financial performance and provide variance insights.
- Prepare and present financial reports to leadership.
- Support strategic decision-making through financial forecasting.
- Partner with stakeholders to develop and manage annual budgets.
- Monitor budget adherence and recommend adjustments.
- Liaise with central finance and external partners.
- Oversee invoicing, call payments, and compensation for partner programs.
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Ensure compliance with reporting standards and timelines.
- Lead grant and PI financial reporting, including start-up funds and sponsored projects.
- Identify financial trends and areas for cost savings or revenue growth.
- Implement improvement initiatives with operational teams.
- Manage gift account projections and costing allocations.
- Advise department leaders on financial performance and strategy.
- Facilitate cross-functional financial discussions.
- Provide training and resources to enhance financial literacy.
- Lead and develop the Neuroscience Finance team.
- Set performance goals and provide coaching.
- Promote a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
- Lead or support cross-functional financial projects.
- Assist in policy development and updates.
- Prepare for and support internal and external audits.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- At least 5 years of progressive experience in financial planning, budgeting, or analysis.
- Direct experience managing sponsored project and research grant funding.
- Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
- Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- 7+ years of financial experience in a healthcare or higher education setting.
- Deep knowledge of UT and/or state financial policies and systems (e.g., Workday, DEFINE, Smartsheet, Docu Sign).
- Demonstrated experience managing inpatient and outpatient operational budgets.
- Proven ability to synthesize clinical and operational data into strategic financial recommendations.
$105,000+ depending on qualifications
Working Conditions- This position reports directly to the Senior Director of the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, with a dotted line to the Director of Budget and Forecasting at Dell Medical School.
