Position Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is accountable for providing leadership and oversight in the areas of finance and accounting. The CFO will set the Texas Exes financial policy and direction while also being an active participant in the association’s overall strategy. The CFO will lead all financial administration, business planning, and budgeting. As a member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will work closely with the CEO, COO, CAO, and the Board of Directors and various committees and taskforces.

Job Functions
  • Manage the association’s business planning and budgeting processes
    • Manage business planning process with each department lead including development of detailed operational goals and departmental budget
    • Manage process to roll-up and balance budget, submit to the Finance Committee and gain approval from Board of Directors
    • Manage ongoing process to review actuals to budget and progress on operational goals with department head on scheduled basis
    • Manage periodic completion of operational and financial dashboards at the departmental and overall association level
    • Review operational dashboards and budget vs. actuals with Finance Chair and submit to Finance Committee on standing basis
  • Manage the association’s financial health, assets, forecasting, analysis, and reporting
    • Create, review, distribute, and present financial statements prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles on monthly basis with CEO and on quarterly basis with Finance Committee
    • Perform financial forecasting to ensure long term financial health and stability
    • Perform financial analysis of various aspects of the business for various purposes including invest/maintain/divest decisions, long term funding decisions, etc.
    • Manage cash flow
    • Manage collections and payment of all association’s obligations
  • Oversee investments portfolio activity and work with the independent investment consultant and investments committee
    • Serve as custodian of all funds, securities, and assets of the organization
    • Direct third-party oversight of the investment portfolio in accordance with corporate investment policies to maximize return while preserving capital assets
    • Monitor and analyze investment portfolio and produce and present monthly reports to CEO and Board of Directors
    • Coordinate Investment Committee scheduled reviews and manage execution of meetings
    • Coordinate with Investment Chair on review of Investment Policy and periodic assessment of management model and/or consultant
    • Collaborate with Investment Chair to keep Board of Directors informed on results
  • Manage tax preparation and annual audit
    • Manage personnel to prepare and have access to all documentation required to complete tax filings and audit
    • Interface with the external accounting firm during the annual audit and tax return preparation
    • Manage the Audit Committee review of the audit and correspondingly, inform Board of Directors of results
  • Oversee and ensure appropriate coverage for all business insurance policies
  • Oversee annual selection, implementation, and administration of employee benefit plans
  • Select, train, develop, and supervise staff
  • Other duties as assigned as they pertain to typical responsibilities of this position
Essential

Job Requirements
  • BS in Accounting or Finance, CPA highly desirable
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the generation and review of financial statements, accounting processes, budgeting, audit, tax filings, and other compliance requirements, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • High degree of financial acumen
  • Strong project management, leadership, and decision-making skills
  • Results oriented
  • History of producing an unqualified audit (clean audit) as determined by an independent auditor annually
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with accountants, board members, volunteers, University administration, members, and staff regarding association business
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills to select, guide, develop, and motivate staff to contribute at a high level with minimal turnover
  • Proven ability to document, implement, and comply with policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain a balanced budget—meet or exceed fiscal year budget
  • Experience with nonprofit governance strongly preferred
  • Possess high level of integrity, credibility, work ethic, and a commitment to our mission
  • Flexible and a self-starter
  • Ability to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented
  • Ability to attend and work occasional evening and weekend events
