Job TitleBusiness and Financial Operations
SummaryThis role provides tax analysis, policy interpretation, and customer support within the Tax Policy Division of the Texas Comptroller’s Office. Positions range from Tax Analyst I to Tax Analyst IV and from Tax Attorney I to Tax Attorney IV, each requiring progressively more experience and expertise.
Responsibilities- Interpret tax statutes, rules, and policies for taxpayers, tax professionals, state officials, and agency personnel.
- Respond to information requests and conduct research; consult with other personnel to draft written responses.
- Draft basic rules and rule amendments reflecting legislative changes, hearings, court decisions, or agency policy in assigned tax areas.
- Develop and review division’s tax-related web content.
- Develop and present basic training classes; create course outlines, training aids, and class materials.
- Complete special projects and other related duties as assigned.
- Tax Analyst –
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and two to five years of experience in tax analysis or a related field, including drafting public documents and reviewing legislation. Preferred experience includes specific Texas indirect or direct taxes and experience drafting administrative rules. - Tax Attorney –
Minimum qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree and 0–4 years of legal experience researching, analyzing, and communicating federal or state tax laws. Preferred experience includes specific Texas indirect or direct taxes and drafting administrative rules. - Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or J.D. may substitute for up to two years of experience.
- For Tax Attorney I–IV:
State Bar of Texas license required. - Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
