Position Overview

We regulate the insurance industry, administer the Texas workers’ compensation system, perform the duties of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and educate and protect consumers. Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct actuarial review and analysis of property and casualty rate filings to ensure compliance with the Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code.
  • Prepare summaries of findings and make recommendations for approval or disapproval of regulated rates.
  • Review and evaluate rate making techniques and their appropriateness in developing rates for various lines of insurance.
  • Review actuarial opinions, reports, and memorandums in rate and rule filings, form filings, credit scoring model filings, underwriting guideline filings, and information submitted to comply with filing requirements or special data requests.
  • Conduct research, data review, and analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports to monitor the insurance market.
  • Review and implement legislation with regard to actuarial matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, risk management, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in the actuarial field and four exams toward associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society; exams must be listed in the application, resume, or cover letter.
  • Regular work attendance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements.
  • Actuarial formulas, methods, and procedures.
  • Loss reserving and pricing methods, assumptions, and calculations.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs such as Centralized Accounting Payroll and Personnel (CAPPS) and other systems required to perform the job.
  • Using standard office equipment.
  • Applying actuarial principles and techniques.
  • Communicating and working effectively with a wide range of people with varied skills, knowledge, and backgrounds.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Analyzing and solving work‑related problems and working independently on a variety of administrative work and technical assignments.
  • Managing and coordinating multiple tasks and priorities to meet necessary deadlines.
  • Working both independently and as a team player.
  • Developing, preparing, and presenting technical reports, correspondence, and presentations for consumers, public officials, industry representatives, and other groups.
  • Interpreting insurance rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
