Actuary III (Actuary)

This position is in the Property and Casualty Actuarial Office of the Property and Casualty Division. The Actuarial Office provides actuarial review of rate and rule filings; reviews credit scoring models for compliance; conducts in-depth analyses of the Texas insurance markets; and conducts various other analysis.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts actuarial review and analysis of property and casualty rate filings to ensure compliance with the Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code.
  • Prepares summaries of findings and makes recommendations for approval or disapproval of regulated rates.
  • Reviews and evaluates rate making techniques and their appropriateness in developing rates for various lines of insurance.
  • Reviews actuarial opinions, reports, and memorandums in rate and rule filings, form filings, credit scoring model filings, underwriting guideline filings, and information submitted to comply with filing requirements or special data requests.
  • Conducts research, data review, and analysis.
  • Prepares technical reports to monitor the insurance market.
  • Reviews and implements legislation with regard to actuarial matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, risk management, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in the actuarial field and four exams toward associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society; exams must be listed in the application, resume, or cover letter.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements.
  • Proficiency with actuarial formulas, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of loss reserving and pricing methods, assumptions, and calculations.
  • Problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to use personal computers to enter and extract data from related systems such as Centralized Accounting Payroll and CAPPS and other required systems.
  • Experience applying actuarial principles and techniques.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Analytical skills to solve work‑related problems independently.
  • Management of multiple tasks and priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Team player who can also work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, team members, coworkers, and the public.
  • Capability to develop, prepare, and present technical reports, correspondence, and presentations to consumers, public officials, industry representatives, and other groups.
  • Interpret insurance rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
