Position Overview:

The Curriculum Standards and Student Support Division's Special Projects team, carries out the State Board of Education's review and revision process for the K-12 curriculum standards known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS. The Director of Special Projects coordinates the work of the special projects team and performs advanced managerial work, including providing direction, guidance, and leadership in the strategic planning and coordination of activities related to general curriculum law and rule, particularly with respect to Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 74, and the state graduation requirements.

Additionally, this position's work includes composing, editing, and reviewing advanced technical documents such as bill analyses, legislative reports, SBOE agenda items, internal and external policy communications, and curriculum standards.

The Director of Special Projects reports to the Senior Director of the Curriculum Standards and Students Support Division within the Office of School Programs, closely partnering with the division's management team and staff from other divisions to provide support and guidance for programs required by state law or rule. The director will also be responsible for planning, supervising, and evaluating the work of approximately 5 team members.

1. Curriculum Standards Review and Adoption:
Effectively leads, trains supports, and guides the administration of the State Board of Education's TEKS review and revision process to develop and maintain high-quality content standards. Maintains calendar of TEKS reviews and trains staff for project specific tasks.

2. Stakeholder Engagement and Technical Support:
Leads outreach, engagement, and communication events and activities in support of collaboration and support for key stakeholders. Works with staff to support budget, reimbursements, contracts, and travel. Oversees changes to website.
